VKB Group is seeking a qualified and motivated Assistant Accountant to join VKB Retail Services in Bethlehem, Free State. This is a permanent position within the Commercial business unit of the VKB Group, operating in the agriculture sector.

The VKB Group is a farmer-owned agricultural company that supports farmers and produces straight-from-the-farm foods for consumers. With regional brands including VKB, GWK, and NTK, the group operates across the full food supply chain, including production, processing, logistics, and national and global market channels.

About the Role

The Assistant Accountant supports the finance team within a fast-moving retail service environment. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional who enjoys working with numbers, maintaining accuracy, and solving financial challenges.

The position involves assisting with daily accounting operations, reconciliations, reporting, and compliance. The successful candidate will work closely with operations teams to ensure financial records accurately reflect on-the-ground activities.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone comfortable balancing ledgers, working with spreadsheets, and contributing to process improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

The Assistant Accountant assists with day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable and accounts receivable.

Ledger allocations are processed accurately and within required timeframes.

Bank accounts, supplier statements, inventory records, and contra or offset accounts are reconciled regularly.

Support is provided during month-end and year-end reporting processes.

Costs, margins, and stock movements across sites are tracked and analysed.

Financial reports are prepared to assist management in making data-driven business decisions.

The role requires close collaboration with operations teams to ensure that financial data aligns with operational realities.

Audit requirements and compliance processes are maintained in accordance with company standards.

Financial Reporting and Compliance

A key component of the role is ensuring that financial records are accurate, complete, and compliant with audit standards. The Assistant Accountant plays an important role in maintaining structured financial documentation and supporting internal controls.

The ability to maintain high levels of accuracy under pressure is essential, particularly during reporting cycles and reconciliations.

Qualifications and Experience

A relevant BCom degree in Accountancy or a similar qualification is required.

Completion of SAIPA or SAICA articles is highly advantageous.

Experience in a fast-moving operational or processing environment is beneficial.

Strong Microsoft Excel skills are required, including pivot tables and advanced formulas.

Experience with Microsoft Navision or Business Central is advantageous.
