Position Overview

Job Title: Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Industry: Freight / Cargo (EE position)
Location: Johannesburg, Gauteng
Employment Type: Permanent
Remuneration: R1 200 000 – R1 440 000 per annum (CTC)
Benefits: Fuel card + Cellphone

The Chief Operating Officer will be responsible for overseeing all operational aspects of the business, ensuring efficient workflows, strategic growth, and optimal productivity. Reporting directly to the CEO, the COO will lead cross-functional teams, strengthen systems and processes, and implement initiatives to achieve sustainable operational excellence.


Key Responsibilities

1. Organisational Leadership

  • Partner with the CEO and executive team to define and drive the organisational vision and strategy.

  • Develop and execute business strategies aligned with short- and long-term objectives.

  • Oversee company operations and performance management across all departments.

  • Foster a high-performance, inclusive culture with a focus on mentorship and accountability.

  • Monitor performance metrics and implement strategies to ensure measurable success.

2. Operational Strategy & Management

  • Develop operational strategies supporting organisational growth and efficiency.

  • Streamline processes to maximise cost-effectiveness and productivity.

  • Drive continuous process improvements and implement industry best practices.

  • Oversee financial controls, internal systems, and compliance processes.

  • Collaborate with finance to manage budgets and control operational costs within BEE requirements.

3. Business Analytics, Risk & Reporting

  • Develop robust analytics and reporting systems to inform executive decision-making.

  • Monitor operational and financial performance, proactively mitigating risks.

  • Ensure compliance with company standards and industry regulations.

  • Conduct audits and risk assessments to identify performance gaps and corrective actions.

  • Use data insights to optimise performance and support business sustainability.

4. Customer Service & Retention

  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships and client relationships.

  • Negotiate partnership agreements with favourable terms for the business.

  • Lead customer-focused initiatives to improve service delivery and retention.

  • Conduct client and service provider meetings to identify opportunities for growth.

5. Talent & Technology

  • Foster a culture of equity, learning, and continuous improvement.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop operational teams to achieve excellence.

  • Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies to enhance customer service, safety, and operational performance.


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Finance, or Business Management (or equivalent qualification).

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the transport or freight industry.

  • At least 5 years’ senior management experience in an operational leadership role.

  • Proven track record in business strategy, financial management, and performance optimization.

  • In-depth knowledge of supply chain operations, financial controls, and customer service principles.

  • Experience in the aviation and road freight sector is advantageous.

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership abilities.

  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills.

  • High-level proficiency in Microsoft Office, data analytics, and financial systems.

  • Understanding of Basic Conditions of Employment and Industrial Relations legislation.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams and work under pressure.
