Key Performance Areas & Duties

The appointed Handyman will carry out general maintenance, infrastructure repair, and facility inspections across college properties:

Building & Infrastructure Repairs

  • Execute minor general building and equipment repairs, including painting office spaces and repairing damaged furniture.
  • Unblock drains, urinals, and toilets, replace leaking taps, and maintain main kitchen fat traps.
  • Clean gutters and maintain stormwater drainage channels to prevent water accumulation.

Maintenance Inspections & Safety Controls

  • Conduct routine weekly and monthly safety and building inspections to identify physical defects.
  • Report unauthorized movement of equipment, deliberate property damage, and asset vandalism to management.
  • Report major structural or technical maintenance requirements to the supervisor in a timely manner.

Tool & Equipment Safeguarding

  • Ensure all maintenance tools, power tools, and equipment are cleaned, maintained, and stored securely in a safe environment.
  • Perform ad hoc maintenance activities attached to the facility management section.

Minimum Requirements & Competencies

Qualifications & Experience

  • National Senior Certificate / Grade 12 / Standard 10 or equivalent qualification.
  • Certificate Qualification in Plumbing, Electrical, or Carpentry.
  • 0 to 6 months’ experience in a general maintenance or similar technical environment.
  • A recognized Trade Test Certificate will be an added advantage.
  • A valid Code 10 / EC1 driver’s license will be advantageous.

Knowledge Base

  • Understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.
  • Practical knowledge of operating hand and power tools safely.
  • Knowledge of building infrastructure layouts, maintenance standards, and building safety laws.
  • Safe storage and maintenance procedures for tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Basic computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).
