About the Role

As a Casual Cashier at Dis-Chem Blue Route Mall, you will be the final point of contact for customers, ensuring an efficient, accurate, and pleasant checkout experience.
You will process point-of-sale (POS) purchases, accept cash, card, voucher, and coupon payments, and scan accelerator partner loyalty cards (including Discovery Miles/Vitality, Momentum Multiply, eBucks, ABSA Rewards, Medihelp Lifestage, and Legacy Lifestyle). You will also strictly adhere to Dis-Chem’s standard operating procedures regarding cash drop safes, line voids, price changes, and till security to eliminate fraud risk and stock discrepancies.

Key Responsibilities of a Casual Cashier

Point of Sale & Cashier Operations
  • Transact all merchandise purchases, scanning outgoing stock, scripts, and store items accurately.
  • Receive and process diverse payment methods including cash, credit/debit bank cards, vouchers, and coupons.
  • Process customer loyalty cards and accelerator partner programs (Discovery, eBucks, Multiply, ABSA Rewards, etc.).
  • Handle customer merchandise exchanges and returns when authorized by store supervisors.
  • Maintain strict accuracy and zero tolerance toward till shortages or processing errors.
Cash Security & Financial Compliance
  • Maintain full responsibility for cash drawer security, keeping money strictly secured inside the till at all times.
  • Drop excess cash into drop safes according to Dis-Chem SOPs and daily cash-handling limits.
  • Ensure all line voids, price adjustments, and returns are countersigned and approved by the Frontline Supervisor.
  • Keep POS terminal passwords, user codes, and daily takings strictly confidential.
Customer Service & Store Safety
  • Deliver Dis-Chem’s 5-star communication principles and establish a friendly, professional rapport with shoppers.
  • Promptly report customer compliments, complaints, or merchandise queries to Frontline Supervisors or store management.
  • Maintain strong vigilance across the cashier area to identify and report suspicious behavior or security risks immediately.

Minimum Requirements – Casual Cashier

Educational Background & Experience
  • Grade 12 / Matric Qualification (Essential).
  • Minimum of 6 months’ experience operating cash registers, till drawers, and handling cash in a retail environment (Essential).
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English (Essential).
  • Basic computer literacy (MS Office / POS systems) (Essential).
  • Ability to speak a third additional official language (Advantageous).

  • Willing and able to work retail hours, including weekends, public holidays, and flexible shift schedules.
