About the Role

Lion Sands, part of the MORE Collection portfolio, is a flagship luxury safari property in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve — one of the most prestigious private game reserves in Africa. As Executive Housekeeper, you will carry full operational and leadership responsibility for the Housekeeping department, overseeing all aspects of guest room preparation, laundry service, public area cleanliness, and departmental staff management. You will be the standard-bearer for housekeeping excellence across the property, ensuring that every room, every turn-down service, and every guest interaction within your department reflects the exceptional quality and thoughtful warmth that Lion Sands guests expect.

This is a role that sits at the intersection of operational precision and genuine hospitality. Beyond maintaining flawless physical standards, you will be expected to lead, develop, and inspire a housekeeping team — managing performance, driving training, overseeing scheduling, and building a department culture that embodies the MORE brand values of awareness, generosity, diversity, and continuous improvement.

The Executive Housekeeper at Lion Sands also carries significant financial accountability, including budgeting, cost management, stock control, and resource allocation. The ideal candidate brings sound knowledge of housekeeping and laundry procedures, proven mid-senior level management experience in a luxury hospitality environment, and the personal qualities to serve as a role model for both service excellence and the MORE Sustainability programme.

Key Responsibilities

Housekeeping Service & Guest Room Standards

  • Ensure all guest rooms are cleaned and prepared to the property and MORE Collection standard, maintaining daily cleanliness of all vacant rooms without exception.
  • Oversee and ensure the execution of spring cleaning, room freshening, and turn-down service to the required property and company standards.
  • Provide a timely and efficient portage service to guests on arrival and departure as directed by management.
  • Collect and communicate guest information and preferences prior to arrival, ensuring all available details are shared with the relevant teams to personalise the guest experience.
  • Collect guest preferences during interactions and inform management to record and action individual guest preferences for current and future stays.
  • Ensure all guest complaints are reported to management immediately, maintaining the property’s commitment to responsive and professional guest care.

Laundry Service & Linen Management

  • Oversee the laundering of room and table linen, guest linen, staff uniforms, management uniforms, and personal clothing — both machine wash and hand wash — to the required standard.
  • Ensure linen and clothing is maintained at all times, including stain removal, mending, and repair in line with property standards.
  • Ensure the safekeeping of all linen until its return to the guest, management, or staff member, or until it is issued for housekeeping service.
  • Ensure that all laundry equipment — including washing machines, tumble dryers, and irons — is operated effectively and in accordance with manufacturer instructions and manuals.

Guest Areas & Public Space Cleaning

  • Ensure thorough cleanliness across all guest areas, guest room areas, staff quarters, management quarters, swimming pool areas, and the garbage room.
  • Ensure dustbins and the garbage room area are cleaned thoroughly and maintained to the required hygiene standard at all times.
  • Ensure the separation of garbage — including bottles and paper — in accordance with property and company sustainability and waste management standards.

Fire, Hygiene, Health & Safety Compliance

  • Ensure that all work practices within the Housekeeping department are efficient, clean, and hygienic at all times.
  • Ensure all equipment items are correctly cleaned and stored after use, and that any defects or faults are reported to Maintenance and followed up on without delay.
  • Ensure that all housekeeping team members have a complete understanding of the cleaning chemicals used within their area of work, including safe and effective application.
  • Ensure full adherence to Hygiene and HACCP Standard Operating Procedures across the department.

  • Ensure that all necessary stocks are ordered and on hand at the right quality and quantity, in line with company standards and established par levels.
  • Assume full responsibility for costs, stores, losses, discrepancies, and expired stock items within the department.
  • Establish an integrated cost management plan through product lining, minimal inventories, joint procurement with sister properties, and delivery on demand where feasible.
  • Review monthly forecasts and schedule resources accordingly, targeting costs to deliver a consistently excellent product.

Human Resources, Training & People Development

  • Maintain discipline within the department according to company standards, addressing deviations in line with the company’s disciplinary procedures.
  • Follow, monitor, manage, train, review, and implement performance standards to establish and maintain a streamlined and efficient housekeeping operation.

Core Values

Be AWARE

The MORE Collection value of awareness — eyes and ears open, arriving ready, being human — is at the heart of the Executive Housekeeper role. Excellence in luxury hospitality housekeeping is built on noticing what others miss: the detail that is slightly out of place, the guest preference that was mentioned in passing, the team member who needs support before they ask for it. An Executive Housekeeper at Lion Sands arrives each day fully present, fully attentive, and fully committed to seeing the property and its guests through the lens of genuine care.

Respond GENEROUSLY

MORE Collection’s “more” value — always respond, give more, do more, have a mindset of abundance — defines the spirit in which this role operates. Whether it is a last-minute guest request, an urgent laundry situation, or a team member who needs additional training, the Executive Housekeeper responds with generosity of time, energy, and attention. The standard at Lion Sands is never “good enough” — it is always “what more can we do?” and the Executive Housekeeper leads that culture from the front.

Strength in DIVERSITY

The Housekeeping team at a luxury safari property reflects the rich cultural diversity of the communities it serves and employs. MORE Collection’s “family” value — act in harmony, work together, act inclusively — is lived most visibly in how the Executive Housekeeper builds and leads their team. A department that feels respected, represented, and genuinely included is a department that performs at its best and delivers the warmth of authentic hospitality to every guest.

Make it BETTER

Continuous improvement is the fourth pillar of MORE Collection’s values, and it applies as much to housekeeping standards and training programmes as it does to broader business strategy. The Executive Housekeeper is expected to own the performance of their department fully — to identify what could be sharper, to implement better systems, to keep learning, and to positively influence the culture and capability of the team around them. A mindset of “own it” and “keep learning” is what separates a good housekeeping manager from an exceptional one.

Sustainability as a Standard

MORE Collection’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community care is not a corporate policy — it is a lived practice, and the Executive Housekeeper is one of its most important champions on property. From waste separation and responsible chemical use to energy and water conservation across the laundry operation, the Housekeeping department has a direct and material impact on Lion Sands’ sustainability footprint. The Executive Housekeeper leads that impact with intention, ensuring that every team member understands why it matters and how their daily actions contribute to the larger mission.

Career Growth Opportunities

MORE Collection invests in the development of its hospitality leaders, and the Executive Housekeeper role is a well-established step on the path to senior property and group management. With demonstrated operational excellence, strong people leadership, and a commitment to the MORE brand values, you can progress through the following stages:

  • Executive Housekeeper → Head of Housekeeping (Multi-Property)
  • Head of Housekeeping → Rooms Division Manager
  • Rooms Division Manager → General Manager
  • General Manager → Regional General Manager / Group Operations Executive

Your career path is in your hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What salary and benefits does MORE Collection offer for this Executive Housekeeper position? The salary for this position is market related and will be discussed and confirmed during the interview and offer process. MORE Collection benchmarks remuneration competitively within the luxury safari and lodge hospitality sector in South Africa. Given that this is a live-in or lodge-based position at Lion Sands in the Sabi Sand, the package will likely include accommodation and meals on property, and the full details of the remuneration and benefits structure will be outlined during the selection process. Candidates are encouraged to discuss their expectations openly.

Is this a live-in position at the Lion Sands property in the Sabi Sand? Lion Sands is located within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve near Hazyview, Mpumalanga — a remote wilderness area that typically requires housekeeping and operations management staff to be based on property on a rotational roster basis. The specific roster, live-in arrangements, and associated benefits will be confirmed during the interview process. Candidates must be comfortable with the remote, bush-based nature of the role and the lifestyle that comes with working in a luxury safari environment.

What level of experience is required to be considered for this role? This is a mid-senior level position, and MORE Collection is looking for candidates who bring proven housekeeping management experience from within a luxury hotel, lodge, or safari property environment. You should be able to demonstrate a track record of leading a housekeeping team, managing departmental budgets and stock, conducting training, and maintaining the physical and service standards expected of a world-class hospitality property. Candidates with experience only at a team member or supervisor level, without full departmental management accountability, are unlikely to meet the seniority threshold for this role.

How important is knowledge of sustainability practices for this position? Sustainability is a core and non-negotiable dimension of this role, not an optional extra. MORE Collection’s Sustainability programme is embedded across all properties and all departments, and the Executive Housekeeper is expected to be a role model for sustainable practice within their team. This includes responsible chemical use and storage, waste separation and reduction, energy and water conservation in the laundry operation, and active participation in the broader MORE Sustainability standards. Candidates who are genuinely passionate about environmental stewardship and community care will be strongly preferred.

What does the financial accountability component of this role involve? The Executive Housekeeper at Lion Sands carries full financial responsibility for the Housekeeping department’s operational budget. This includes setting annual operating targets, monitoring daily and month-to-date costs, managing stock levels against par levels, overseeing procurement and requisition processes, controlling payroll and overtime, and implementing cost management measures that do not compromise service quality. Candidates who have not previously managed a departmental budget — including stock takes, requisitions, and cost reporting — should carefully consider whether they meet the financial accountability requirements of this position.
