The primary purpose of the General Assistant – Drive Thru Yard Department is to deliver outstanding customer service while ensuring the smooth, efficient operation of the drive-thru yard. By loading customer vehicles and trucks promptly, maintaining accurate stock counts, and keeping the yard clean and organized, the General Assistant helps prevent stock losses, safeguards profit margins, and ensures customers enjoy a seamless drive-thru shopping experience.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service & Vehicle Loading

• Load customer vehicles, delivery trucks, and transfer vehicles promptly, safely, and accurately according to purchase invoices.

• Assist customers in a friendly, polite, and helpful manner using basic product knowledge.

• Assist with bagging building materials such as stone, sand, and aggregates as required.

Stock Control & Inventory Handling

• Ensure building materials and yard inventory are properly stacked, organized, and counted.

• Assist in pulling stock for inter-branch transfers and order fulfillments.

• Report any observed stock shortages, damaged items, or breakages immediately to supervisors.

• Participate actively in perpetual stocktakes and physical inventory audits.

Yard Housekeeping & Operational Support

• Maintain clean and tidy work areas by sweeping, clearing debris, and upholding strict housekeeping standards.

• Ensure drive-thru lanes and storage zones remain safe and accessible for vehicles and staff.

• Perform additional work-related tasks as assigned by yard supervisors and store management.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

Educational Baseline & Preferred Experience

• Education: Grade 12 / Matric Certificate or equivalent qualification.

• Work Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience in a similar yard, warehouse, or retail general assistant role is preferred.

Skills & Physical Competencies

• Physical Fitness: High physical stamina and strength required for heavy lifting, manual loading, and outdoor yard work.

• Numerical Skills: Ability to count stock items accurately during loading and stocktaking.

• Customer Service: Strong commitment to delivering friendly customer service under busy retail conditions.

• Work Ethic: Self-disciplined, motivated, able to handle pressure, and capable of working independently as well as within a team.
