Core Duties & Responsibilities

The Student Liaison Officer manages an active portfolio across five distinct operational areas to maximize student success:

1. Career Guidance & Student Induction

  • Provide comprehensive student liaison services directly at the Balfour campus, acting as the primary point of contact for student needs.

  • Guide students and path their careers safely by analyzing performance metrics and aligning their studies with industry trends.

  • Manage and execute the formal induction of new students at the campus to facilitate smooth social and academic transition.

  • Oversee the application and placement processes for incoming students at the campus support center.

2. Student Welfare & Socioeconomic Counseling

  • Provide psychological and welfare support to students by actively liaising between external stakeholders, healthcare entities, and the college.

  • Address severe socioeconomic student matters appropriately, including offering support frameworks for substance abuse and other personal issues.

  • Conduct targeted home visits when necessary to interview and counsel students, families, staff, and relevant stakeholders to isolate root factors behind performance drops.

  • Drive continuous awareness campaigns regarding HIV/AIDS, wellness, and preventative healthcare to the student body.

3. Academic Support & Intervention Mapping

  • Assist with the design and deployment of academic support plans for identified at-risk students.

  • Guide students to make correct elective choices to systematically improve their cumulative academic performance.

  • Manage fundamentals support programmes and coordinate peer educator frameworks at the campus student support center.

4. Attendance Management & Outreach

  • Promote regular campus attendance and monitor student attendance registers with a high eye for detail.

  • Establish and deliver progressive absence reduction programmes to support vulnerable students and their families before academic exclusion occurs.

5. Administration & Reporting

  • Prepare detailed weekly support records and monthly operational reports for submission to management.

  • Meet institutional deadlines while operating independently under pressure.

Minimum Appointment Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria to pass initial human resource screening:

  • Academic Credentials: A Bachelor’s Degree or National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Social Science, Education, Psychology, or a relative qualification recognized by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

  • Practical Experience: 1 to 2 years of proven work experience within a Student Support Service environment, a Teaching and Learning environment, or a closely related public sector field.

  • Teaching Prerequisite: Lecturing experience in fundamental programmes is a strict requirement for this position.

  • Theoretical Knowledge: Proven understanding of the TVET sector, basic psychology, teaching methods, and general public sector legal frameworks (including the Public Service Act, Public Service Regulations, Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations, and the Batho Pele Principles).

  • Technical Skills: High proficiency in computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), project management, administration, and problem-solving.

  • Interpersonal Traits: High confidence, exceptional listening skills, the ability to build immediate rapport with young adults, and the flexibility to work out of hours when required.
