About the Role
The Post Basic Qualified Pharmacist Assistant will play an essential role in supporting pharmaceutical care and dispensary operations at Dis-Chem Pharmacies. The successful candidate will assist pharmacists with dispensing medication, processing prescriptions, managing stock, maintaining patient records, and ensuring compliance with legal and healthcare regulations.
This role requires a qualified individual who is registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) and capable of working within a fast-paced retail pharmacy environment. Daily responsibilities include assisting with the sale of scheduled medicines, dispensing support, script capturing, stock management, medical aid claims, and customer care services.
This is a highly regulated healthcare role requiring professionalism, accuracy, excellent communication skills, and strong attention to detail. Candidates must also be comfortable working retail hours and standing for extended periods in a controlled dispensary environment.

Key Responsibilities of a Post Basic Qualified Pharmacist Assistant
Dispensing & Pharmaceutical Support
- Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines.
- Support pharmacists with dispensing and prescription preparation.
- Assist with the compounding and preparation of non-sterile medicines.
- Assist with repackaging and labelling of medication.
- Ensure medications are checked and signed off by a pharmacist.
Prescription Processing & Patient Care
- Accurately interpret and capture prescriptions on the system.
- Verify patient information and maintain accurate customer profiles.
- Explain medication usage instructions clearly to patients.
- Assist patients with self-medication and dispensary enquiries.
- Follow up on patient appointments and script tracking reports.
Medical Aid & Administration
- Process paperwork for medical aid claims accurately.
- Correct rejected medical aid scripts where necessary.
- Explain medical aid costs and procedures to patients.
- Ensure authorisation of chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medication.
- Maintain accurate system records and profile updates.
Stock Control & Inventory Management
- Assist with ordering medicines and scheduled substances.
- Receive and merchandise dispensary stock according to FEFO principles.
- Report low stock levels and stock discrepancies to management.
- Participate in bi-annual stock takes.
- Exercise stock, cash, and asset control procedures.
Operational Compliance & Customer Service
- Ensure compliance with SAPC and Medicines Act regulations.
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all interactions.
- Promote health awareness and provide patient information.
- Adhere to Dis-Chem SOPs and dispensary procedures.
- Deliver excellent customer service at all times.
Minimum Requirements – Post Basic Qualified Pharmacist Assistant
Educational Qualifications:
- Grade 12 / Matric Certificate (essential)
- Basic Pharmacist Assistance qualification (essential)
Experience:
- Entry-level applicants may apply
- Retail or FMCG pharmacy experience advantageous
- Oncology experience advantageous
Licences:
- Valid driver’s licence (essential)
- Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)
Technical Skills:
- Computer literacy in MS Office
- Knowledge of Unisolv, SAP, and E-Scripting advantageous
- Knowledge of medical aid procedures and script processing
- Understanding of stock control and dispensary procedures
