What Does a Government Driver Operator Do?
Driver Operators are essential to the daily transport and logistics operations of Air Force Base Waterkloof. In this role, you will be responsible for driving light and medium vehicles to transport passengers and items, maintaining vehicles in good condition, providing messenger and administrative support, completing all required logbook records, and adhering to all transport legislation — ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant movement of personnel and goods across the base.
This is a physically active, responsibility-driven role that requires a valid Code C1 driver’s licence, a minimum of three years’ driving experience, and the willingness to work irregular hours in a structured military environment.

Key Responsibilities of a Driver Operator
Vehicle Operation & Passenger Transport
- Drive light and medium vehicles to transport passengers and other items as directed.
- Always track and check the condition of the vehicle before and during use.
- Report any vehicle defects or mechanical issues to the supervisor immediately.
- Adhere to all transport legislation and prescribed driving standards at all times.
Vehicle Maintenance & Condition
- Maintain the allocated vehicle and ensure it remains in good working condition at all times.
- Conduct routine checks and report any defects, damage, or maintenance requirements to the supervisor promptly.
- Ensure the vehicle is clean, roadworthy, and ready for deployment at all times.
Logbook & Record Keeping
- Complete all required and prescribed records in the logbook with regard to vehicles and goods handled.
- Ensure logbook entries are accurate, complete, and up to date after every trip.
- Maintain records in line with departmental and transport legislation requirements.
Administrative & Messenger Services
- Provide administrative and messenger services as directed.
- Collect and dispatch documents and any other items as directed by the supervisor.
- Ensure all items collected and dispatched are handled with care and delivered to the correct recipients timeously.
Compliance & Availability
- Always adhere to prescripts as directed by transport legislation and departmental policies.
- Be willing to work irregular hours as required by operational demands.
- Follow orders precisely and carry out all assigned duties professionally and timeously.
Minimum Requirements – Driver Operator
Educational Qualifications:
- Grade 11 (NQF Level 3) or equivalent qualification
Licences & Experience:
- Valid driver’s licence Code C1 (essential)
- Minimum of 3 years’ driving experience (essential)
