WHAT DOES A SPORTS FACILITATOR DO?
A Sports Facilitator plays a key role in offender rehabilitation by designing and delivering structured sports and recreation programmes within a correctional environment. These programmes promote physical health, discipline, teamwork, and social development.
The role involves coaching, organising sporting activities, managing facilities and equipment, and collaborating with rehabilitation teams to support offender reintegration. The ideal candidate is organised, resilient, and able to work effectively in a secure and regulated environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Programme Planning & Implementation
- Develop and implement annual and weekly sports programmes
- Align activities with rehabilitation and reintegration goals
- Adapt programmes for different risk levels and abilities
- Integrate life skills and discipline into activities
Coaching & Facilitation
- Facilitate coaching sessions across multiple sports codes
- Conduct drills, conditioning, and skills development
- Promote teamwork, fair play, and conflict resolution
- Manage and monitor offender participation
Rehabilitation Support
- Collaborate with psychologists, social workers, educators, and CMCs
- Align sports activities with case management plans
- Reinforce positive behaviour and social development
- Track and report progress and behavioural outcomes
Events & Logistics Management
- Organise tournaments, leagues, and wellness events
- Coordinate venues, officials, equipment, and approvals
- Ensure compliance with security and safety protocols
- Manage all event logistics and planning
Facilities, Safety & Equipment Control
- Inspect and maintain sports facilities and equipment
- Conduct risk assessments and safety briefings
- Ensure proper first aid response and incident reporting
- Maintain asset registers and tool control systems
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
🎓 Educational Qualifications
- Matric / Grade 12 (essential)
- OR NQF Level 6 qualification in Sport Management Sciences / Behavioural Sciences
- Successful completion of Correctional Science Learnership / Basic Training
💼 Experience
- With Matric: Minimum 10 years’ experience at CB1 level
- With NQF Level 6 qualification: No experience required
💻 Technical Skills
- Basic computer literacy
- Ability to manage reports and data records
📚 Knowledge Requirements
- Basic understanding of OHSA (Occupational Health & Safety Act)
- Knowledge of rehabilitation programmes and sport facilitation
🧠 Skills & Competencies
- Strong coaching and facilitation skills
- Excellent interpersonal and conflict management abilities
- Good planning, organising, and time management skills
- Ability to work in a secure and regulated environment
⚖️ Legal Requirements
- Valid driver’s licence
