What Does a Bookkeeper Do at Sisonke?
The Bookkeeper at Sisonke is responsible for the full bookkeeping function across multiple operational streams — including tourism services, transport logistics, and hospitality. In this role, you will manage the complete bookkeeping cycle up to trial balance, handle debtors and creditors, process VAT, manage payroll and statutory requirements, coordinate supplier payments and cash flow, perform bank reconciliations, and support monthly reporting and financial administration.
This is a key, hands-on, in-office bookkeeping role that requires 3–5 years of bookkeeping experience, proven industry experience in tourism, transport, or hospitality, strong Sage Accounting proficiency (non-negotiable), and a proactive, solutions-driven mindset in a fast-paced operational environment.
Key Responsibilities of a Bookkeeper
Full Bookkeeping Function
- Manage the complete bookkeeping function up to trial balance across all Sisonke’s operational streams.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records for tourism services, transport logistics, and hospitality activities.
- Support monthly reporting and general financial administration as required by management.
Debtors & Creditors Management
- Manage debtors and creditors, including regular reconciliations to ensure all accounts are accurately maintained.
- Follow up on outstanding debtors and ensure timely collection of amounts due.
- Process creditor payments accurately and within agreed supplier payment terms.
VAT Compliance
- Calculate, prepare, and submit VAT returns in accordance with SARS requirements and deadlines.
- Ensure all VAT processing is correctly applied across all transaction types in the business.
- Maintain VAT records and supporting documentation for audit and compliance purposes.
Payroll Processing & Statutory Requirements
- Process monthly payroll accurately and ensure all statutory deductions — including PAYE, UIF, and SDL — are correctly calculated and submitted.
- Ensure compliance with all payroll-related statutory requirements and submission deadlines.
Supplier Payments & Cash Flow
- Coordinate supplier payments to ensure timely settlement within agreed terms.
- Monitor and manage cash flow to support the operational requirements of the business.
- Maintain accurate payment records and supporting documentation.
Bank Reconciliations & Financial Controls
- Perform regular bank reconciliations to ensure all transactions are correctly recorded and accounted for.
- Maintain strong financial controls across all bookkeeping functions to protect the integrity of financial data.
- Identify and resolve reconciling items timeously.
Minimum Requirements – Bookkeeper
To be considered for this Bookkeeper position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Experience:
- 3–5 years of bookkeeping experience at an intermediate level — essential
- Proven experience within the tourism, transport, or hospitality industry — essential
Systems:
- Strong working knowledge of Sage Accounting — non-negotiable
Technical Knowledge:
- Solid understanding of VAT processes, calculations, and SARS submission requirements
- Solid understanding of payroll processes and statutory requirements
Skills & Competencies:
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Strong organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
