Frequently Asked Questions – Financial Associate Jobs
What is FAIS and why does it apply to this role? FAIS (Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act) is the South African legislation that regulates financial advisers and intermediaries who sell or give advice on financial products — including insurance. Financial Associates must qualify as Fit and Proper individuals under FAIS, which involves meeting specific qualification, experience, and honesty requirements. The qualification requirements vary depending on when you entered the financial services industry, as outlined in the requirements above.
What is RE 5? RE 5 (Regulatory Examination 5) is the Fit and Proper examination for Representatives under FAIS — the individuals who interact directly with clients in selling or advising on financial products. Passing RE 5 demonstrates regulatory competence and is a definite advantage for candidates applying for this role.
What is an ITC record and why does it need to be clear? ITC (Information Trust Corporation, now TransUnion) maintains credit records for South African consumers. A clear ITC record means the applicant does not have adverse credit listings such as judgements, defaults, or sequestrations. Financial services employers routinely check ITC records for client-facing roles involving financial products.
What products will I be marketing? The role involves marketing AVBOB’s Funeral Insurance policies, Savings Plans, and related AVBOB products to clients in the Northam area. AVBOB is one of South Africa’s largest and most trusted funeral insurance providers.
Is this a field-based or office-based role? This is primarily a field-based sales and marketing role. Financial Associates actively engage with clients in the community, attend to client queries, and recruit business in their designated area — supported by the Northam Insurance Office.
Does AVBOB apply Employment Equity? Yes. AVBOB is committed to Employment Equity and preference will be given to suitably qualified individuals from previously disadvantaged groups in South Africa.
