What Does a Government Driver/Messenger Do?
Government Drivers/Messengers are essential to the smooth daily operations of departmental logistics and communication. In this role, you will be responsible for collecting and delivering departmental documents, transporting employees and guests to their destinations on time, maintaining accurate trip and vehicle records, and supporting the department with general office and messenger duties — ensuring that all logistics are handled professionally, reliably, and in line with departmental policies.
This is a trust-based, service-driven role that requires a valid driver’s licence, knowledge of road traffic regulations, strong organisational skills, and a high level of integrity and confidentiality in a busy government department environment.
Key Responsibilities of a Driver/Messenger
Document Collection & Delivery
- Collect and deliver documents on behalf of the Department as directed.
- Collect, deliver, and distribute departmental documents to relevant stakeholders.
- Ensure all documents are handled with care, confidentiality, and delivered timeously.
Transporting Employees & Guests
- Transport employees and guests of the Department to their destinations on time.
- Plan routes effectively to ensure punctual and safe transportation at all times.
- Maintain professional conduct and courtesy when transporting passengers.
Vehicle & Trip Record Keeping
- Record kilometres accurately when undertaking every trip.
- Maintain accurate records of the utilisation of the allocated motor vehicle.
- Complete and maintain log sheets and petrol receipts in accordance with departmental requirements.
- Report any vehicle defects, damage, or mechanical issues to the supervisor promptly.
Road Safety & Traffic Compliance
- Apply knowledge of road traffic rules and regulations in all driving activities.
- Ensure the safety of all passengers and the vehicle at all times.
- Adhere to all applicable road traffic legislation and departmental transport policies.
General Office & Messenger Support
- Assist with general office administrative and clerical duties as directed.
- Provide messenger and support services to the Department as and when required.
- Handle all duties with a high sense of urgency, reliability, and discretion.
Minimum Requirements – Driver/Messenger
To be considered for this Driver/Messenger position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Educational Qualifications:
- Grade 12 certificate or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification
Experience:
- 1 to 2 years’ experience as a driver/messenger
Licences:
- Valid unendorsed driver’s licence (mandatory)
Knowledge Requirements:
- Understanding of road traffic rules and regulations
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong driving skills and safe vehicle operation
- Sound organisational skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with people at different levels and from different backgrounds
- Computer literacy — proficient in MS Office
