What Does a Government Security Officer (NKP) Do?

National Key Point Security Officers are essential to the protection of critical government infrastructure. In this role, you will be responsible for guarding and patrolling departmental premises, enforcing access control, operating control room equipment, and responding to security incidents and emergencies — ensuring that the Jericho Dam and surrounding infrastructure is protected at all times in line with national key point legislation and security protocols.

This is a high-responsibility, operationally demanding role that requires relevant security certifications, firearm competency, and the ability to respond decisively under pressure during shift work including weekends and public holidays.

Key Responsibilities of a Security Officer (NKP)

Guarding & Patrolling

  • Guard and patrol departmental premises and the National Key Point area at all times.
  • Conduct regular patrols of the premises to detect and deter unauthorised access or suspicious activity.
  • Ensure the security and integrity of all departmental infrastructure and assets at all times.

Access Control

  • Conduct and enforce compliance with access control procedures at all departmental premises and the NKP main entrance.
  • Search vehicles, people, and property in accordance with access control procedures and the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977.
  • Permit or deny entry to the premises as required and in accordance with applicable legislation and procedures.
  • Ensure the prohibition of unauthorised removal of equipment and assets from the premises.

Control Room Operations

  • Operate control room security equipment as required.
  • Monitor surveillance and security systems and respond to alerts promptly.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all control room activities and incidents.

Incident Management & Arrests

  • Arrest transgressors within the NKP area in accordance with applicable legislation and authorisation.
  • Ensure all incidents are accurately recorded in the Occurrence Book.
  • Apply emergency procedures in situations including bomb threats, riots, and other emergency scenarios.
  • Report all security incidents, near-misses, and breaches to the supervisor immediately.

Information & Asset Protection

  • Apply knowledge of Minimum Information Security Standards (MISS) in all security activities.
  • Ensure the protection of departmental assets and sensitive information at all times.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in all security-related matters.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure all security activities comply with applicable legislation, departmental policies, and NKP regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records and submit reports as required by the supervisor.
  • Participate in security briefings, training, and emergency drills as required.

Minimum Requirements – Security Officer (NKP)

To be considered for this Security Officer (NKP) position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Educational Qualifications:

  • NQF Level 4 / Senior Certificate / Grade 12 or equivalent qualification

Experience:

  • 1 to 3 years’ experience in the security industry

Mandatory Certificates:

  • PSIRA Grade C certificate
  • Firearm Training Certificate with Business Purpose
  • SAPS Firearm Competency Certificate
  • National Key Point (NKP) Certificate

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Knowledge of Minimum Information Security Standards (MISS)
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of assets and information protection
  • Knowledge of access control procedures and the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977

Skills & Competencies:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond decisively in emergency situations
  • Must be willing to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays
  • Must be cleared of any pending criminal records
