What Does a Maintenance Investigator Do?
Maintenance Investigators are essential to the administration of family law and the enforcement of maintenance obligations across the district. In this role, you will be responsible for serving legal documents, tracing defaulting parties, providing sworn testimony in court, and delivering administrative support to the Maintenance Office.

Key Responsibilities of a Maintenance Investigator
Serving Legal Documents
- Serve maintenance summons, subpoenas, warrants, and garnishee orders across the district in terms of the Maintenance Act (Act 99 of 1989).
- Ensure all legal documents are served accurately, timeously, and in accordance with prescribed procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of all documents served and report back to the Maintenance Office.
Tracing & Locating Persons
- Locate the whereabouts of persons involved in maintenance matters across the district.
- Use available resources and investigative methods to trace defaulting maintenance payers.
- Liaise with relevant stakeholders to assist in locating individuals where required.
Court Testimony
- Give sworn testimony in court under oath as required in maintenance proceedings.
- Prepare and present accurate accounts of investigations conducted.
- Conduct all court-related duties professionally and in accordance with legal requirements.
Administrative Support
- Render administrative support to the Maintenance Office as directed.
- Maintain organised and accurate records of all maintenance matters handled.
