About Ingwe TVET College & Siteto Campus
Ingwe TVET College serves the OR Tambo District Municipality of the Eastern Cape — a predominantly rural region with significant infrastructure and skills development needs. The Siteto Campus is one of the College’s campuses serving its local community — providing post-school education and vocational training to young people across the surrounding rural areas. The Handyman is a critical facilities professional at the campus — maintaining buildings, plumbing, electrical systems, and carpentry across the campus infrastructure, ensuring a safe and functional learning environment for students and staff.
Purpose of the Role
The Handyman is responsible for carrying out multi-trade maintenance and repair work across Siteto Campus — including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical monitoring — as well as conducting building inspections, identifying health and safety hazards, coordinating the campus health and safety committee, liaising with suppliers and contractors, and maintaining office equipment and furniture.
Key Responsibilities – Handyman
Carpentry
- Carry out carpentry by fixing furniture, roofs, and ceilings — repairing damaged furniture, timber structures, ceiling boards, and roof components across campus facilities.
Electrical Monitoring
- Monitor repair work on electricity — overseeing electrical maintenance and repair activities carried out at the campus, identifying faults and hazards, and liaising with qualified electricians for work beyond the Handyman’s scope.
Plumbing
- Install, repair, and maintain complete plumbing systems and appliances — handling the full range of plumbing maintenance requirements across the Siteto Campus, including taps, pipes, geysers, sanitary fittings, and drainage systems.
Building Inspections & Hazard Identification
- Conduct regular inspections of buildings and other facilities — systematically checking all campus structures and infrastructure for maintenance needs, safety hazards, and defects.
- Identify machinery faults, health, safety, and environmental system hazards — reporting all identified issues with recommendations for remediation.
Maintenance Orders & Supplier Liaison
- Place orders for relevant repairs and installations — initiating procurement requests for materials, parts, and contractor services as required.
- Liaise with suppliers and constructors for new structures and major maintenance — coordinating external service providers for large-scale or specialist maintenance work beyond the Handyman’s capacity.
Health & Safety
- Coordinate the health and safety committee at the campus — administering OHS committee activities, meetings, and compliance requirements.
- Make contributions to the health, safety, and environmental system in the workplace — actively supporting campus OHS compliance and a safe learning environment.
General Maintenance
- Maintenance of office equipment and furniture — ensuring all campus office assets are maintained in functional, clean, and safe condition.
Minimum Requirements – Handyman
- Grade 12 / NCV Level 4 — essential
- 1 year of relevant experience — essential
- Certificate in Plumbing, Carpentry, or Electrical — essential (one or more trades)
- Trade test certificate — added advantage
- Valid driver’s licence — essential
- Good listening and writing skills
- Good interpersonal relations

Frequently Asked Questions – Handyman Jobs Eastern Cape
What is the difference between a trade certificate and a trade test certificate? A trade certificate (also called a skills programme certificate or vocational certificate) is awarded upon completion of a recognised training programme in a specific trade — such as a TVET NCV Plumbing programme, a short skills programme, or a SETA skills programme. A trade test certificate is the formal competency certification issued by NAMB (National Artisan Moderation Body) after a candidate passes a formal trade test assessment — the highest formal recognition of artisan competency in South Africa. For this post, a trade certificate in Plumbing, Carpentry, or Electrical is the minimum requirement, while a full NAMB trade test certificate is listed as an advantage — making the post accessible to candidates who are trained but not yet fully trade-tested.
Is this Siteto Campus post part of the same Ingwe TVET College as the Maluti Campus Data Capturer post? Yes — both posts are at Ingwe TVET College campuses in the Eastern Cape OR Tambo District, share the same application address (HRA Unit, PO Box 92491, Mount Frere), the same enquiries contact (Ms NA Damoyi, (039) 940 2142), and the same closing date (07 April 2026 at 16:00). Candidates who meet the requirements for both posts may apply for each simultaneously — submitting a separate Z83 application with the correct reference number for each post.
What OHS legislation applies to a TVET campus environment? The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA, Act 85 of 1993) and its regulations govern workplace safety in South African educational institutions including TVET campuses. The Handyman’s OHS responsibilities include identifying and reporting hazards, supporting the campus OHS committee, ensuring maintenance work complies with OHSA standards, and reporting machinery or equipment safety issues. Familiarity with the OHSA and basic OHS compliance principles is a practical requirement for this role.
What does “liaising with constructors for new structures” involve? When the campus undertakes new building projects or major renovations, the Handyman coordinates with appointed contractors — facilitating site access, monitoring work quality, reporting progress and issues to campus management, and ensuring that construction activities comply with campus safety requirements. This is a coordination and oversight function rather than direct construction work — the Handyman acts as the campus’s on-site liaison rather than as a construction worker.
