Purpose of the Role
The Food Service Aid is responsible for rendering assistance with the preparation, cooking, and serving of food and drinks across AFB Makhado’s catering facilities — maintaining kitchen, dining hall, and food storage hygiene, setting and waiting on tables, managing kitchen waste, packing supplies, and ensuring only authorised personnel access the kitchen and meal facilities.
Key Responsibilities – Food Service Aid
Food Preparation & Cooking
- Hygienically prepare food — including washing, cutting, and cooking — in accordance with the base’s food preparation standards and applicable food safety and hygiene regulations.
- Prepare and serve tea, coffee, and drinks — ensuring prompt, professional beverage service for all dining personnel.
- Pack supplies received in food storage areas — correctly storing all food deliveries and maintaining organised, clean food storage facilities.
Food & Beverage Service
- Serve food to base personnel — delivering meals promptly, professionally, and in the correct portions.
- Supply water on dining tables — maintaining adequate water provision for all diners throughout service periods.
- Set tables including decoration — preparing the dining hall for service with correctly laid and appropriately presented table settings.
- Wait on tables — providing attentive, professional table service during meal periods.
Kitchen & Dining Hall Hygiene
- Keep the kitchen, dining hall, and food storage areas clean and tidy at all times — applying a high standard of hygiene throughout all work areas.
- Remove all kitchen waste — ensuring timeous, correct disposal of food waste and kitchen refuse in accordance with hygiene standards.
- Wash and clean up after meals — restoring all kitchen, service, and dining areas to a clean, organised state after every service period.
- Apply a high standard of hygiene and safety measures throughout the work environment — at all times and without exception.
Equipment Management & Access Control
- Ensure the serviceability of kitchen and catering equipment — reporting any defects or shortages to the supervisor immediately.
- Ensure that only authorised personnel have access to the kitchen and/or consume meals — maintaining security and access control standards within the catering facility.
