Purpose of the Role

The primary purpose of the SHEQ Assistant is to implement and maintain Fraser Alexander’s SHEQ management systems in order to effectively manage safety, health, environmental, and quality-related risks within the area of responsibility.

The role focuses on creating an environment where employees act responsibly regarding risks associated with their work environment.

The position also includes developing basic SHEQ systems aligned with client requirements where these are not covered by existing internal systems.

This role contributes directly to regulatory compliance, operational safety, and quality assurance within mining operations.

Key Responsibilities

Policy, Targets, Objectives, and Goals

The SHEQ Assistant must ensure that current SHEQ policies are displayed in all operational areas.

Employees must be made aware of the SHEQ policy, targets, objectives, and goals.

The role supports the communication and reinforcement of safety and quality standards throughout the operation.

Legal Aspects and Requirements

Company practices must be monitored to ensure compliance with legislative requirements.

Applicable statutory documents must be submitted in accordance with regulatory timelines.

Quality data files must be monitored, reviewed, and compiled accurately.

Quarterly reviews of appointments within each audit area must be conducted and updated where necessary.

Management and appointed individuals must be advised regarding their roles, responsibilities, and duties.

The environmental management plan and client requirements must be monitored and reviewed.

The project quality plan must be implemented and monitored effectively.

Risk Assessment

Baseline risk assessments must be ensured for all contracts, covering environmental, quality, and occupational health and safety aspects.

Medical status of employees must be monitored.

Control measures for identified hazards must be implemented and compliance must be monitored.

Environmental requirements must be reviewed to ensure operational adherence.

Reporting, Recording and Review

Monthly reports must be submitted to the SHEQ Manager.

All disabling or SHEQ-related incidents must be reported to the SHEQ Manager.

The SHEQ Assistant must report incidents and assist with incident management processes.

Special Projects

Ongoing feedback must be provided to management throughout project execution.

A project review must be conducted upon completion to support continual improvement.

Liaison with technicians and laboratory personnel must be maintained to coordinate inspection and testing schedules.

Minimum Qualifications

Diploma in Health and Safety Management

Certified Internal Audit for Integrated Management Systems

First Aid Certification

Proven experience implementing ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems

Proven experience implementing ISO9001 Quality Management Systems

Proven experience implementing ISO45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems

Experience Requirements

Minimum of 1–2 years’ proven experience in a SHEQ role

Expertise in hazard identification and risk assessment
