About the Role

The 2IC Security Manager at Thorburn Security Solutions operates within a high-volume Distribution Centre environment in Kempton Park, providing essential senior-level support to the overall management of site security operations. In this role, you will lead and manage security personnel, implement crime prevention and risk mitigation strategies, manage security incidents and investigations, conduct risk assessments and security inspections, oversee access control and patrol operations, support control room functions including CCTV monitoring and alarm management, and maintain accurate incident records and operational documentation.

Key Responsibilities of a 2IC Security Manager

Security Operations Management

• Support the overall management of security operations within the high-volume Distribution Centre environment, ensuring all security functions are executed to the highest standard of operational excellence and compliance.
• Lead and manage security personnel across all operational functions — guarding, access control, patrols, search procedures, and control room — ensuring consistent performance, discipline, and adherence to site procedures.
• Manage guarding operations, access control, patrols, and search procedures across the distribution centre, ensuring all personnel are correctly deployed, briefed, and performing to the required standard.
• Act as second-in-command to the Security Manager, deputising and making operational decisions with confidence and authority when required.

Crime Prevention & Risk Mitigation

• Implement effective crime prevention and risk mitigation strategies tailored to the specific risks and vulnerabilities of a high-volume distribution centre and logistics environment.
• Conduct risk assessments and security inspections regularly, identifying potential vulnerabilities and implementing corrective action plans to address risks before they escalate into incidents.
• Think proactively about emerging security risks — anticipating threats, identifying patterns, and taking pre-emptive action to protect the site, its staff, and its assets.
• Ensure that all anti-crime measures, access control protocols, and search procedures are consistently applied, enforced, and monitored across all entry and exit points of the Distribution Centre.

Incident Management & Investigations

• Manage security incidents, investigations, and escalations professionally and decisively, ensuring all incidents are responded to promptly, thoroughly investigated, and correctly documented.
• Act decisively and professionally during emergencies and critical incidents, providing clear leadership and direction to the security team while coordinating with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
• Maintain accurate incident reporting and operational records, ensuring all documentation is completed to the standard required for audit, legal, and client reporting purposes.
• Ensure that all corrective actions arising from incidents and inspections are implemented effectively and tracked to completion.

Control Room & Technology Oversight

• Support and oversee control room operations, including CCTV monitoring, alarm management, and the coordination of security responses arising from control room observations.
• Maintain working knowledge of CCTV systems, alarm monitoring platforms, and general security technology applicable to the distribution centre environment.
• Ensure that all control room personnel are performing their functions correctly, that monitoring systems are operational, and that any technical faults are reported and escalated without delay.

OHS Compliance, Client Relations & Reporting

• Ensure full compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements and all applicable site procedures, maintaining a safe working environment for security personnel and all site users.
• An OHS qualification will be advantageous in supporting this compliance responsibility.
• Build and maintain professional relationships with clients and key stakeholders, communicating security matters with clarity, confidence, and professionalism at all levels.

Minimum Requirements – 2IC Security Manager

Educational Qualifications:

• Grade 12 / Matric (essential)
• Occupational Health and Safety qualification (advantageous)

Professional Registration:

• PSIRA Grade A registration — valid and current (essential — non-negotiable)

Licences:
