Dis-Chem Pharmacies Limited is building a strategic talent pipeline for a Trainee Manager position at its Jeffrey’s Bay store in the Eastern Cape. This permanent opportunity is designed for ambitious retail professionals who are ready to grow into future management roles within one of South Africa’s leading pharmacy and FMCG retailers.

The purpose of this pipeline role is to create a pre-screened pool of high-potential candidates who possess the skills, qualifications, and attributes required to step into Trainee Manager and future Store Management roles as opportunities arise.


About the Role

The Trainee Manager position is a structured development role that provides exposure to all key retail management disciplines, including inventory control, sales execution, financial administration, customer service, and people management.

Successful candidates will work closely with Store and Department Managers while completing formal learning programmes, on-the-job training, and practical assessments. This role is ideal for individuals who are committed to building a long-term retail management career within Dis-Chem Pharmacies.


Key Responsibilities

Inventory Management

The Trainee Manager will assist in ensuring accurate stock control across FMCG, Health, and Beauty departments. Responsibilities include supporting the processing of goods in transit, cycle counts, physical stock takes, system reconciliations, and shrinkage management.

The role also supports efficient stock flow to the sales floor and assists with ordering stock to maintain optimal stock levels in line with store requirements.


Sales Floor and Receiving Operations

The role includes assisting with the planning, implementation, and maintenance of promotional displays, as well as ensuring compliance with labelling, pricing, and layout standards.

The Trainee Manager will support goods receiving activities according to standard operating procedures, assist with transaction integrity for receipts and returns, and help reconcile daily receiving documentation in line with internal controls.


Sales Targets and Commercial Performance

The Trainee Manager will support store management in achieving sales targets across FMCG, Health, and Beauty categories. This includes partnering with department heads to execute promotions, sharing best practices with other stores, and maintaining awareness of market and competitor trends.

The role contributes to identifying sales and profit opportunities, proposing innovative ideas to increase market share, and assisting in the development of regional retail strategies.


Point of Sale Operations and Financial Support

Responsibilities include assisting with daily cash-ups, reviewing reconciliation packs, and supporting point-of-sale scheduling to ensure efficient service delivery.

The Trainee Manager will assist in monitoring expenses, managing stock adjustments, supporting transaction integrity, analysing basic financial statements, controlling overtime and casual labour spend, and assisting during internal and external audits.


Customer Service Excellence

The role supports the resolution of customer complaints and compliments, ensures customer request systems are actioned daily, promotes loyalty programme sign-ups, and assists with accurate processing of loyalty points.

Providing clear feedback to customers and supporting a consistently high standard of service is a key responsibility.


HR Process and People Management Support

The Trainee Manager will assist with people administration tasks such as leave management, staff scheduling, and employee file management. The role supports HR submissions, compliance documentation, and workforce management processes through the KRONOS system.

Supporting training initiatives, policy implementation, and feedback collection from staff forms part of the development journey.


Trainee Programme Adherence

The role requires full participation in training programmes, workshops, and assessments, completion of all learning modules, and maintenance of an up-to-date Portfolio of Evidence. Progress is monitored and signed off in collaboration with the Regional Admin Manager.


Minimum Requirements

Essential

  • Grade 12 / Matric

  • 1–2 years’ experience in retail store management disciplines, including stock management, cash handling, reporting, expense control, and customer service

  • Computer literacy (MS Office)

  • Willingness and ability to work retail hours

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Own reliable transport

Advantageous

  • Diploma in Financial, Administrative, or relevant 3-year qualification
