About Air Force Base Hoedspruit

Air Force Base Hoedspruit is one of the South African Air Force’s most operationally significant forward bases — located in the Hoedspruit area of the Limpopo Lowveld, adjacent to the greater Kruger National Park region. The base operates in a demanding bushveld environment where maintenance of plumbing, building services, electrical systems, and workshop equipment is critical to daily operational readiness. The Tradesman Aid team provides essential technical support to the base’s maintenance and engineering functions — working across plumbing, building services, electrical equipment, tyre fitting, painting, and workshop repairs under the supervision of qualified tradespeople.

This post introduces a second Limpopo base to the DOD cluster alongside AFB Makhado — extending the cluster’s Limpopo coverage from the Soutpansberg (north) to the Lowveld (east).

Purpose of the Role

The Tradesman Aid provides hands-on technical support across plumbing, building maintenance, electrical equipment operation, tyre fitting, painting, battery charging, and workshop repairs at AFB Hoedspruit — maintaining a safe working environment, assisting qualified tradespeople, and keeping equipment, tools, and work areas clean, safe, and operational.

Key Responsibilities – Tradesman Aid

Plumbing Support

  • Repair leaking geysers, taps, and leaking water pipes — providing first-line plumbing repair support across the base’s water and sanitation infrastructure.
  • Unblock main sewage lines — performing sewage and drainage maintenance as directed by the supervisor.
  • Support effective plumbing, building service, and repairs and all maintenance-related tasks — assisting qualified plumbers and building services personnel in the execution of maintenance programmes.

Building Maintenance & Painting

  • Perform painting and marking of floors — maintaining floor surfaces, safety markings, and painted areas across base facilities and workshop environments.

Electrical Equipment & Machinery

  • Operate and maintain electrical saw equipment and machinery on time — ensuring all assigned electrical tools and machinery are correctly operated, maintained, and available when required.
  • Charge batteries — maintaining the charging cycle and condition of all battery-powered equipment assigned to the Tradesman Aid team.
  • Carry out cleaning of work areas and dangerous machines when switched off — maintaining safe, clean equipment in strict accordance with lock-out/tag-out safety procedures.

Tyre Fitting & Vehicle Support

  • Assist with repair and fitting of tyres — providing tyre maintenance and replacement support across AFB Hoedspruit’s vehicle and equipment fleet.

Workshop Support & Equipment Care

  • Assist in repairing equipment in the unit’s workshop — supporting qualified artisans in the diagnosis, disassembly, repair, and reassembly of workshop equipment and base machinery.
  • Keep equipment in a safe place — ensuring all tools, machinery, and materials are correctly stored and secured after use.
  • Clean and maintain machinery and tools — keeping all assigned equipment in clean, serviceable, and ready condition.

Safe Working Environment

  • Prepare and maintain a safe working environment — identifying and addressing hazards, applying health and safety procedures, and ensuring the work area meets the DOD’s occupational health and safety standards at all times.

Frequently Asked Questions – Tradesman Aid Government Jobs South Africa

What trade test certificate is required for this post? The vacancy states “a trade test certificate” without specifying the particular trade. Given the duties — which span plumbing, building maintenance, electrical equipment operation, tyre fitting, and general workshop support — trade test certificates in plumbing, electrical, fitting and turning, boilermaking, or general building maintenance are likely most relevant. Candidates holding any recognised trade test certificate should contact Maj M.M. Visagie or Capt P. Ratheko at (015) 799 2924 / 2387 to confirm whether their specific trade qualifies before applying.

What is a trade test certificate and how is it obtained in South Africa? A trade test certificate is a formal qualification issued under the National Artisan Development (NAMB) framework — certifying that the holder has demonstrated practical competency in a recognised trade to the required national standard. Trade tests are administered at accredited trade test centres across South Africa and overseen by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) and NAMB. Recognised trades include plumbing, electrical, boilermaking, fitting and turning, automotive mechanics, bricklaying, plastering, and others. A trade test certificate is the primary formal recognition of artisan competency in South Africa.

What does “lock-out/tag-out” mean and why is it mentioned? The duty description specifies cleaning of “dangerous machines when switched off” — referencing the lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) safety procedure. LOTO is a standard occupational health and safety practice in maintenance environments — requiring that all energy sources to a machine (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic) are isolated, locked, and tagged before any cleaning, maintenance, or repair work is performed. The Tradesman Aid must apply LOTO procedures strictly to prevent accidental machine start-up while working in close proximity to equipment.

How does this post differ from the AFB Makhado Store Assistant or Food Service Aid posts? All are Level 02, ABET-qualified government posts — but the Tradesman Aid is the only Level 02 post in the DOD cluster that requires an additional trade test certificate. This makes it technically more demanding and specifically targeted at candidates with formal artisan training — rather than the general ABET-only entry of the cleaner, groundsman, and food service roles. The multi-trade scope (plumbing, electrical, tyre fitting, workshop) also provides significantly broader technical career development than any other Level 02 post in this batch.

Where are the Gate Golf 1 and Golf 8 hand delivery points? AFB Hoedspruit has multiple security access points — Gates designated Golf 1 and Golf 8 are the specified hand delivery entry points for this post. Candidates hand-delivering applications should present at either of these gates. Confirm gate locations and access procedures with Capt P. Ratheko at Prince.Ratheko@dod.mil.za or (015) 799 2924 / 2387 before visiting the base.
