The Department of Agriculture plays a crucial role in advancing food production, land management, and agricultural training across South Africa. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to support agricultural operations essential for training, research, and high-quality crop production.
Position Overview
The Tractor Driver will operate tractors, implements, and specialised machinery to support daily farming operations at GADI. This includes land preparation, planting, harvesting, road maintenance, firebreak preparation, transportation of goods, and general farm support work.
The role also includes equipment maintenance, logbook management, and adhering to safety standards to ensure effective farm operations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Tractor & Implement Operation
- Operate tractors with various implements such as ploughs, rippers, planters, and sprayers.
- Support farming activities including:
- Land cultivation
- Planting and tillage
- Harvesting
- Transportation of goods
- Mowing lawns
- Fencing activities
- Firefighting and firebreak support
2. Specialised Machinery Operation
- Operate machinery such as:
- Bulldozers
- TLBs
- Harvesters
- Excavators
- Drilling equipment
- Sewer jetting machines
3. Road & Firebreak Maintenance
- Perform road maintenance and repair work.
- Construct and maintain firebreaks using appropriate equipment.
4. Equipment Maintenance & Administrative Duties
- Perform routine cleaning, safe storage, and maintenance of tractors and machinery.
- Maintain vehicle logbooks (monthly and kilometre logs).
- Report defects immediately to prevent further mechanical damage.
- Assist with receiving and dispensing fuel, oils, and lubricants.
Minimum Requirements
- NQF Level 3 / Grade 10 certificate
- Minimum 1 year of experience in farming or machinery operation
- Valid Code C1 driver’s licence
Job-Related Knowledge
- Crop cultivation, planting, and pasture establishment
- Calibration of planters and crop sprayers
- Basic calculations for pesticide/herbicide mixing
- Functioning and basic repair of farm equipment
- Maintenance of farm infrastructure
Job-Related Skills
- Operating tractors and agricultural implements
- Operating specialised machinery (TLB, Bulldozer, harvesters, etc.)
- Planting and harvesting crops
- Road and firebreak maintenance
- Basic mechanical skills
