Joining the RCL Foods technical team at Krugersdorp means stepping into a structured, safety-first, and quality-driven manufacturing environment where every Technical Operator plays a critical role in protecting the integrity of the products that millions of South African consumers trust every day.

Purpose of the Role

The Technical Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining complex food manufacturing equipment and processes to ensure optimal production efficiency, consistent product quality, and full safety compliance. The role actively supports continuous improvement initiatives and ensures strict adherence to food safety standards, SQF requirements, and all operational procedures throughout every shift.

This is a hands-on technical production role that combines equipment operation, quality inspection, safety compliance, accurate documentation, and a proactive improvement mindset in a high-throughput FMCG manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities – Technical Operator

Safety & Equipment Pre-Checks

  • Conduct a thorough inspection of the work area at the start of every shift to identify and eliminate any safety hazards before commencing production.
  • Verify that all equipment using compressed air has completed its operating cycle and manually release any residual pressure before performing any maintenance or changeover activities.
  • Ensure all electrical panels and switches are properly covered and sealed to prevent water ingress during cleaning activities.
  • Confirm that all machine safeguards are securely in place and functioning correctly before operating any equipment.
  • Attend and participate in all relevant safety programmes, toolbox talks, and safety briefings as required.

Food Safety & SQF Compliance

  • Ensure strict adherence to food safety standards, product quality requirements, and Safe Quality Food (SQF) standards throughout every shift and every production run.
  • Promptly report any deviations from food safety, quality, or SQF standards to the immediate Team Leader or Shift Manager without delay.
  • Follow all Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements applicable to the production area and role.
  • Continuously inspect products during production to verify they meet all current quality specifications and are free from defects or non-conformances.
  • Verify that all products and components align with the scheduled production run and the current specification sheet before and during production.

Equipment Operation & Packaging Changeovers

  • Operate complex food manufacturing equipment and production processes to achieve optimal efficiency and output quality throughout the shift.
  • Monitor equipment performance continuously, identifying any deviations in machine behaviour, output quality, or process parameters and addressing or escalating these appropriately.
  • Execute packaging changeovers efficiently and accurately, minimising downtime and ensuring the correct packaging materials, specifications, and settings are applied for each production run.
  • Confirm the correct availability and usage of raw materials before commencing production to prevent delays, waste, or quality failures.

Documentation & Record Keeping

  • Accurately complete all required quality and operational documentation in a timely and legible manner throughout every shift.
  • Maintain complete and up-to-date records of production outputs, quality checks, equipment readings, and any incidents or deviations encountered.
  • Ensure documentation is completed in full compliance with SQF, GMP, and RCL Foods’ internal record-keeping requirements.

Continuous Improvement

  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve production efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance equipment and process performance.
  • Suggest improvements to the Team Leader or Shift Manager constructively and with supporting observations.
  • Support and actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives within the production department.

General Plant Support

  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned to support plant operations, maintenance, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Collaborate effectively with the shift team, maintenance personnel, quality, and management to ensure smooth and uninterrupted production.

Frequently Asked Questions – Technical Operator Jobs South Africa

What does a Technical Operator do in a food manufacturing plant? A Technical Operator operates and monitors complex food manufacturing and packaging equipment, performs quality inspections during production, executes changeovers, manages raw material usage, completes required documentation, and ensures full compliance with food safety and SQF standards throughout every shift.

What is SQF certification and why does it matter? SQF (Safe Quality Food) is an internationally recognised food safety and quality management certification scheme. Compliance with SQF standards is required by major South African and global retailers and ensures that RCL Foods’ products consistently meet the highest food safety and quality benchmarks. Technical Operators play a direct role in maintaining SQF compliance daily.

Is a trade certificate required to apply? A technical trade certificate is listed as advantageous but not essential. Grade 12 is the minimum educational requirement, with an NQF Level 4 qualification in Engineering or Food Technology preferred.

What does a packaging changeover involve? A packaging changeover is the process of switching production from one product or packaging format to another — including changing packaging materials, adjusting machine settings, updating specification sheets, and verifying that the new run meets quality requirements before full production resumes. Efficiency and accuracy in changeovers directly impact plant productivity.

Will I work shifts in this role? Yes. Food manufacturing operates on a shift basis to maintain continuous production. Technical Operators are expected to work rotating shifts as required by the production schedule.

What compressed air safety knowledge is required? Technical Operators must understand how to verify that compressed air equipment has completed its cycle and how to manually release residual pressure safely before performing any maintenance or changeover on pneumatic equipment — a key workplace safety requirement in food manufacturing environments.
