About PathCare
PathCare is a partnership of pathologists in private practice — providing accurate, quality-assured diagnostic laboratory services to doctors and healthcare professionals across South Africa since 1923. HPCSA-registered and SANAS-accredited across all laboratories, PathCare maintains internationally benchmarked ISO 15189 quality standards in every branch, every result, and every patient interaction.
The Welkom branch serves one of the Free State’s most significant urban communities — the city of Welkom and the greater Matjhabeng area — providing essential diagnostic pathology services to the region’s healthcare professionals and patients. The Staff Nurse is the clinical heart of this community service.
PathCare is committed to Employment Equity and diversity. All qualified candidates — including people with disabilities — are encouraged to apply.
Purpose of the Role
The Staff Nurse is responsible for performing phlebotomy and non-blood specimen collection with clinical precision and genuine compassion, operating Point of Care instruments including Hemocue, Stratus, and arterial blood gas analysers, and delivering frontline patient care — consistently upholding PathCare’s values of clinical excellence, ethics, and patient dignity across shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
Key Responsibilities – Staff Nurse
Phlebotomy & Specimen Collection
- Perform venepuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all ages — applying correct technique, sound knowledge of order of draw, and unwavering commitment to patient safety and comfort.
- Collect non-blood specimens in accordance with PathCare’s collection protocols and each test’s pre-analytical requirements.
- Ensure correct container selection, labelling, and handling for every specimen — preventing pre-analytical errors that could compromise diagnostic accuracy and require patient re-sampling.
Point of Care Instrument Operation
- Operate and maintain Hemocue instruments — used for near-patient haemoglobin and glucose measurement.
- Operate and maintain Stratus instruments — used for rapid cardiac marker analysis and other near-patient diagnostic testing.
- Run arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis on the branch ABG analyser — performing and interpreting near-patient blood gas testing in accordance with PathCare’s SOPs and quality control requirements.
- Perform quality control checks, instrument maintenance, and consumable replenishment for all POC instruments as required.
Patient Care & Community Service
- Deliver compassionate, professional, and reassuring care to every patient — prioritising dignity, comfort, and clear communication throughout every clinical interaction.
- Serve the Welkom community with the consistency and empathy that builds long-term patient trust in PathCare’s branch service.
- Handle patient queries and concerns professionally — escalating complex issues to the branch supervisor where appropriate.
Administrative & Operational Support
- Use Meditech and other computer systems accurately to process test requests and capture patient data — supporting the smooth daily operation of the Welkom branch.
- Maintain branch standards throughout every shift — contributing to a clean, safe, and professionally presented branch environment.

Frequently Asked Questions – Staff Nurse Phlebotomy Jobs South Africa
What is Hemocue and when is it used in a pathology branch? Hemocue is a brand of handheld, near-patient Point of Care instruments primarily used for rapid haemoglobin measurement (HemoCue Hb) and blood glucose testing (HemoCue Glucose). In a pathology branch, Hemocue instruments provide immediate results for patients who require rapid screening or monitoring — without waiting for laboratory analysis. The Staff Nurse operates, maintains, and performs quality control on these instruments as part of the branch’s POC testing service.
What is Stratus and what tests does it run? Stratus (Siemens Stratus CS) is a Point of Care cardiac marker analyser — used for rapid near-patient measurement of cardiac biomarkers including Troponin I, CK-MB, myoglobin, and BNP. In a pathology branch context, Stratus is used to provide urgent results for referring clinicians managing patients with suspected cardiac events — where rapid turnaround is clinically critical. Operating the Stratus analyser requires specific training and quality control discipline.
What does arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis involve? Arterial blood gas analysis measures the levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH, and bicarbonate in an arterial blood sample — providing critical information about a patient’s respiratory and metabolic status. ABG samples are time-sensitive and require immediate analysis after collection. The Staff Nurse operates the branch ABG analyser in accordance with PathCare’s SOPs — performing the analysis, interpreting basic results, and ensuring quality control compliance.
Is SANC registration strictly required — can HPCSA-registered phlebotomists apply? This role specifically requires SANC (South African Nursing Council) registration with an Enrolled Nurse Certificate — unlike the Vaalpark vacancy which also accepts HPCSA-registered Phlebotomy Technicians. Only SANC-registered Enrolled Nurses meet the registration requirement for this specific Welkom posting.
