Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance Leadership Role

Tiger Brands is seeking a qualified and experienced SSE Officer to join its operations in Crown Mines, Gauteng. This full-time, onsite position plays a critical role in implementing and maintaining risk controls, health and safety systems, and environmental compliance standards within the business.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the implementation and maintenance of Risk Control Systems, Health & Safety Programs, and Environmental ISO 14001 Standards. This role requires strong regulatory knowledge, leadership capability, and the ability to promote a proactive safety culture across the organisation.

About the Role

The SSE Officer ensures that all Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) processes are effectively implemented and maintained in line with regulatory requirements and company policies. The role includes executing the duties of a Risk Control Officer, managing compliance documentation, coordinating training, and participating in incident investigations and root cause analyses.

This position supports operational management by providing expert advice on HSE issues and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and company procedures. The SSE Officer will also assist with risk and environmental audit preparation and compliance reviews to strengthen the organisation’s safety and environmental management systems.

Key Responsibilities

The SSE Officer is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of Risk Control Systems.

The role includes implementing and maintaining Health & Safety Programs across the facility.

The Environmental ISO 14001 Standard must be implemented and maintained in accordance with compliance requirements.

The SSE Officer will conduct induction training on Health & Safety and ISO 14001 for all employees, visitors, and contractors.

Training requirements must be identified, and training facilities and equipment must be arranged accordingly.

The role includes assisting with Risk and Environmental audit preparation and supporting compliance reviews, general risk assessments, and other safety assessments.

Relevant HSE logs and documentation must be maintained accurately and consistently.

The SSE Officer will assist in ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations and prepare required HSE reports as necessary.

Guidance and recommendations on HSE matters must be provided to facility management.

The role requires participation in detailed incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) processes.

Incident prevention initiatives must be promoted for the benefit of employees and visitors.

The SSE Officer will assist in the development and presentation of relevant HSE training programs.

All HSE regulations must be observed, required safety equipment must be worn, and safe working practices must be encouraged at all times.

The role includes correcting obvious hazards immediately or reporting them to the appropriate personnel.

Positive and proactive relationships must be maintained with managers, employees, customers, and regulatory agencies.

All NOV Company and HSE procedures and policies must be complied with fully.

Performance Measurement

The SSE Officer will be measured on knowledge and enforcement of regulatory requirements, including OSHA, CalOSHA, EPA, and company HSE policies and procedures.

Personal effectiveness will be assessed, including the ability to work with employees and drive cultural change in environments where resistance may exist.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required.

The ability to oversee Safety Incentive Programs is essential.

The role requires oversight of Hazardous Waste Storage areas and ensuring regulatory compliance related to labelling, containment, proper disposal, and documentation.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

A 3-Year Degree in Occupational, Health & Safety Sciences is required.

A Management Course in Security or equivalent qualification is required.

SAMTRAC & IT IS certification or equivalent is required.

Formal ISO 14001 training course or higher qualification is required.

A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a Health & Safety environment is required.

A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a Security environment is required.

A minimum of 2 years’ experience in an Environmental environment is required.
