The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) plays a vital role in strengthening national food security, rural development and institutional integrity. The Directorate: Vetting, Screening and Special Investigations ensures that the department remains protected from internal and external threats, safeguarding national assets and ensuring compliance with state security legislation.
Position Overview
The Senior Security Officer will supervise security operations, ensure full compliance with security legislation, manage access control systems, and support emergency responses within the GADI facility. This role is suited for a security professional with PSIRA Grade B, strong operational discipline and excellent leadership capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise daily security functions carried out by officers and service providers.
- Ensure departmental security policies and standards are implemented and upheld.
- Allocate tasks, monitor performance, and implement corrective measures when needed.
- Manage access control to prevent unauthorised entry into buildings and secured areas.
- Approve movement of documents, equipment, and stores entering or leaving premises.
- Inspect and report malfunctioning security systems, including X-ray machines, metal detectors and lighting.
- Review incident books, registers and ensure proper reporting.
- Support emergency responses and ensure dangerous objects do not enter the premises.
- Conduct proper lock-ups of facilities and access points.
- Identify and follow up on suspicious activity.
- Report security breaches and non-compliance to supervisors.
- Determine shift schedules, rosters and manage overtime.
- Monitor employee performance and training needs.
- Administer PSIRA-related personnel matters and HR compliance.
- Oversee key control, risk identification and threat assessments.
- Provide reports for investigations and support investigating officers.
- Respond to alarm systems and report faulty equipment.
- Conduct preliminary incident investigations and compile detailed reports.
- Manage all control room operations and ensure optimal functioning of security systems.
- Review CCTV footage following approved procedures.
- Maintain updated registers and documentation.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric
- PSIRA Registration – Grade B (Mandatory)
- Minimum of 3 years security experience
- Knowledge of:
- Access control procedures
- Movement control of equipment and stores
- MISS, MPSS, Criminal Procedure Act, Protection of Information Act
- Emergency procedures and threat identification
- Ability and willingness to work 12-hour shifts, travel, weekends, public holidays and irregular hours
- Strong communication, reporting and supervisory skills
