Why Join DPW as Senior Administrative Officer: Property Leasing & Acquisition?
- 10 Posts Nationally — With 3 in Johannesburg alone and posts across Durban, Cape Town, Kimberley, Pretoria, and Mmabatho, this is DPW’s broadest current property management recruitment drive — maximising appointment probability for real estate management graduates in multiple provinces
- PIE Act and Property Law Specialisation — Developing expertise in GIAMA, the PIE Act, property economics, and government lease administration creates a specialist public sector real estate credential that is directly transferable to municipalities, provincial governments, and private property management firms
- Government Accommodation Procurement — Understanding how government departments procure office accommodation — client needs assessment, availability of funds, lease cycles, and accommodation standards — is a specialised knowledge set that few private sector property professionals develop
- Johannesburg — 3 Posts — Johannesburg’s regional office has the most positions in this batch, reflecting the scale of the national government’s accommodation portfolio in Gauteng — the country’s most active government property leasing market
Frequently Asked Questions – Property Leasing & Acquisition Jobs DPW
What is the PIE Act and why is it relevant to DPW property management? The Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act (PIE Act, Act 19 of 1998) governs the eviction of unlawful occupiers from land and buildings in South Africa. It is directly relevant to DPW’s property management function because state-owned buildings and land occasionally become occupied by unlawful occupiers — particularly surplus or vacant state properties. The Senior Administrative Officer must be aware of PIE Act requirements when managing the disposal or reoccupation of state accommodation.
What does “client needs assessment” mean in a government accommodation context? DPW procures office accommodation on behalf of other government departments (Justice, SAPS, Home Affairs, etc.) as the state’s custodian of immovable assets. A client needs assessment establishes what office space a client department requires — including floor area, location, access requirements, security specifications, and lease term — before DPW approaches the property market to source or procure suitable accommodation. This function requires property economics knowledge and stakeholder engagement skills.
How does this post relate to the Assistant Director: Property Disposal (REMS) post on this site? Both are DPW REMS posts — but at different career levels and covering different property management functions. The Property Disposal (REMS) post (Assistant Director, R582 444) manages the disposal of redundant state properties and land release. This Property Leasing & Acquisition post (Senior Administrative Officer, R397 116) focuses on acquiring and administering leased accommodation for government client departments. Together they represent the two ends of DPW’s property portfolio management — disposal and acquisition — and candidates with experience in either area may be competitive for both.
