Frequently Asked Questions – Security Guard Jobs Durban
What is the PSSPF and how does it benefit Dis-Chem security guards? The Private Security Sector Provident Fund (PSSPF) is the bargaining council-mandated retirement savings fund for all employees in the South African private security industry. Both the employer (Dis-Chem) and the employee contribute a percentage of remuneration to the PSSPF monthly. The fund provides retirement, disability, and death benefits — making it a meaningful financial security component of the security guard’s total employment package. PSSPF membership is compulsory under the Private Security Sector bargaining council collective agreement.
What does “cancel staff purchases and goods declared” mean? When Dis-Chem staff members purchase goods from the store for personal use, the transaction must be processed through designated registers and verified by the security guard — confirming that all items the staff member is taking out of the store have been properly paid for and are reflected on their receipt. The security guard “cancels” (verifies and clears) the purchase at the exit point — preventing unauthorised removal of goods under the guise of personal shopping.
What is Kaelo and what benefit does it provide? Kaelo is a South African employee benefit and wellness provider — typically offering access to gap cover, lifestyle benefits, legal assistance, and basic healthcare services as an employer-funded employee benefit. Dis-Chem includes Kaelo as part of the security guard’s benefits package — providing an additional health and lifestyle support layer alongside the PSSPF provident fund.
Why does the retail security role require 3 years of retail industry experience? Retail security in a busy pharmacy and health/beauty store environment is qualitatively different from industrial or residential guarding — requiring familiarity with shoplifting methods specific to retail environments (concealment techniques, distraction, tag removal), professional customer interaction skills, the procedures for handling customer complaints and disturbances without escalating tension, and working knowledge of retail operations (supplier deliveries, staff shopping procedures, till operations). Three years of retail security experience builds the situational awareness and procedural competency that makes a security guard effective in a Dis-Chem pharmacy environment specifically.
