Position Overview
The Secretarial Trainee role is a one-year learnership program designed to train young professionals in comprehensive legal secretarial skills. The program runs from 1 March to 28 February of the following year and includes both practical work experience and structured academic modules.
Trainees will undergo rigorous training in business administration, typing and keyboarding, audio transcription, Microsoft Office proficiency, and legal practice administration. Only candidates demonstrating excellence in the initial phase of training will progress to advanced modules.
This program prepares trainees to become highly competent legal secretaries, ready to contribute effectively in any law firm or corporate legal department upon completion.
Key Responsibilities
Phase I – Foundational Skills

Develop typing and keyboarding proficiency with a target of 60 words per minute.

Gain familiarity with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Acquire basic knowledge of the legal environment and professional work practices.

Begin practical exposure to all law firm practice areas, including Patents, Trade Marks, Commercial, and Conveyancing.

Cultivate professional conduct, grooming, telephone etiquette, and workplace discipline.
Phase II – Advanced Secretarial Skills

Perform advanced typing, audio transcription, and document preparation.

Create spreadsheets, presentations, letters, memos, and other legal correspondence.

Develop strong note-taking, administrative, and organizational skills.

Take initiative and demonstrate accountability in all assigned tasks.

Apply advanced business communication and English language proficiency in practical scenarios.
Practical Administrative Training

Participate in on-the-job training for administrative and secretarial tasks.

Apply business administration principles in real workplace scenarios.

Learn financial planning, time management, and life skills relevant to professional development.

Work under supervision to achieve excellence in all administrative duties.

Minimum Requirements

Aged between 18 and 26 years.

N6 Legal Secretary diploma (advantageous).

Fluency in English, both written and verbal; C-symbol (60–69%) advantageous.
