Frequently Asked Questions – Sales Representative Informal Trade Jobs

What is the “informal trade” in South African FMCG sales? South Africa’s informal trade refers to independently owned, small-format retail businesses — including spaza shops, tuck shops, taverns, street traders, and community convenience stores — that operate outside the formal modern trade (supermarkets, chain stores). The informal trade is a massive and growing FMCG sales channel, particularly in township and peri-urban areas where formal retail penetration is lower. Bread and bakery products are among the highest-velocity informal trade categories — making this a significant and commercially important sales role.

What does “route riding” involve for a Sales Representative? Route riding is the regular practice of accompanying delivery drivers on their routes — observing customer interactions, assessing stock management, checking product placement and pricing, and identifying service issues first-hand. For a Sales Representative managing the informal trade, route riding provides direct, unfiltered visibility into the territory’s performance — revealing which accounts need attention, where competitor products are gaining ground, and which delivery or service issues are affecting customer satisfaction.

What does “crate control” mean in bakery distribution? Premier’s bread products are distributed in bread crates — reusable plastic containers that are delivered with product and collected at the next delivery visit. Crate control means tracking the total number of crates out in the field with customers, ensuring empty crates are being returned, identifying accounts with missing or damaged crates, and managing the deposit and return cycle. Uncontrolled crate losses are a significant cost to the business — making crate control a meaningful financial accountability for the Sales Representative.

How does this Sales Representative role differ from the Premier Assistant Sales post (Pinetown)? Both are Premier sales-related roles — but at different levels and functions. The Assistant Sales (Pinetown) is a distribution support role — physically assisting the Driver Salesman with offloading product and collecting trays on delivery routes. The Sales Representative (East London) is a professional sales account management role — building customer relationships, growing sales targets, managing merchandisers, running promotions, and developing new business. The Sales Representative is the senior, commercially accountable role; the Assistant Sales is the entry-level distribution support role.
