Purpose of the Role
The Sales Clerk (Retail) is responsible for the effective execution of sales and control of stock at the AFGRI Bergville retail branch. You will deliver efficient, knowledgeable customer service to walk-in clients, actively promote and upsell products, manage stock levels, and conduct regular stock counts — ensuring the branch operates smoothly and that every customer leaves with the right product and a positive experience.

Key Responsibilities – Sales Clerk (Retail)
Customer Service & Sales
- Deliver efficient, professional, and friendly customer service to all walk-in clients at the Bergville branch.
- Proactively make customers aware of additional and complementary products to enhance their purchase and increase overall branch sales.
- Provide accurate product information and advice to customers based on a thorough knowledge of AFGRI Retail’s product range.
- Handle customer queries and concerns professionally and promptly, escalating unresolved issues to the branch manager where necessary.
- Build positive, long-term relationships with regular customers and the broader farming community in the Bergville area.
Stock Monitoring & Ordering
- Monitor stock levels on the sales floor and in the storeroom continuously, identifying low-stock situations before they result in lost sales.
- Initiate stock orders from the supplier or procurement department timeously to ensure product availability meets customer demand.
- Liaise with the procurement team to track outstanding orders and follow up on delivery timelines.
Stock Receiving & Pricing
- Take receipt of incoming stock from the receiving department and verify correct counts against purchase orders and delivery documentation.
- Ensure all received stock is correctly priced and shelf-ready before being placed on the sales floor.
- Report any discrepancies, damaged goods, or pricing errors to the branch manager immediately.
Stock Counts & Inventory Control
- Conduct accurate stock counts on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis as required by branch procedures.
- Record stock count results accurately and report any variances or discrepancies for investigation.
- Support the branch in minimising stock shrinkage, loss, and expiry through diligent stock rotation and monitoring.
- Maintain the sales floor in a neat, well-stocked, and visually appealing condition at all times.
Minimum Requirements – AFGRI Sales Clerk (Retail)
Educational Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric) — required
Work Experience
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a direct sales environment — essential
- Prior experience in agricultural retail, farm supply, hardware, or related product sales is strongly advantageous
Technical Knowledge
- Good working knowledge of AFGRI Retail’s product range or a comparable agricultural and farm supply product range
- Computer literate — able to use point-of-sale systems, stock management software, and basic Microsoft Office applications
- Understanding of retail policies, procedures, and customer service standards
