About Air Force Base Makhado — Aviation Operations
Air Force Base Makhado is one of the South African Air Force’s most operationally significant bases — home to frontline fighter and operational aircraft that require fully serviceable runway and airfield infrastructure to fly safely. The base’s runways, taxiways, and hardstands are critical national defence assets — maintained to aviation quality standards that directly determine whether aircraft can operate safely. The Road Workers Aid team maintains this infrastructure — sweeping, inspecting, repairing, and ensuring the airfield environment is safe, clean, and serviceable at all times.
This is the only post in the current AFB Makhado batch where the work directly affects the flying capability of South African Air Force aircraft.
Purpose of the Role
The Road Workers Aid is responsible for maintaining and repairing runways, taxiways, hardstands, compass swing bays, and engine running bays at AFB Makhado — performing serviceability inspections, sweeping airfield surfaces, ensuring safe maintenance environments, and supporting the investigation of technology and equipment improvements — all in accordance with aviation quality standards.
Key Responsibilities – Road Workers Aid
Serviceability Inspections
- Perform serviceability inspections on all assigned equipment — checking the condition, functionality, and readiness of all tools, machinery, and infrastructure components used in airfield maintenance activities.
- Report defects, damage, and serviceability concerns promptly — ensuring that all infrastructure and equipment issues are escalated and resolved without delay.
Runway, Taxiway & Hardstand Maintenance
- Ensure the maintenance and repair of runways, taxiways, and hardstands in accordance with aviation quality standards — maintaining all airfield surfaces in the safe, serviceable condition required for SAAF aircraft operations.
- Sweep runways, taxiways, and hardstands — removing foreign object debris (FOD), loose material, and any other surface hazards that could damage aircraft engines, tyres, or undercarriage during operations.
Compass Swing Bay & Engine Running Bay Maintenance
- Ensure a safe environment with the necessary infrastructure to carry out deeper level maintenance on all compass swing bays and engine running bays — maintaining these specialist airfield facilities in the condition required to support aircraft maintenance and testing activities.
Technology & Equipment Investigation
- Investigate possible expansion of technology and assess the feasibility of procuring new equipment — contributing to the continuous improvement of the base’s airfield maintenance capability by identifying and evaluating new tools, machinery, and methods.
General Airfield Maintenance Support
- Apply knowledge of health and safety in all airfield maintenance activities — operating within a safety-critical aviation environment where procedural compliance directly protects both personnel and aircraft.
- Operate cleaning machines and basic maintenance machinery at low complexity level — applying basic hand tool and machinery knowledge to all daily maintenance tasks.
- Perform routine tasks independently and as part of the Road Workers Aid team — contributing to the consistent, reliable maintenance of AFB Makhado’s airfield infrastructure.
Minimum Requirements – Road Workers Aid
Qualifications
- ABET qualification (minimum) — essential
- Grade 12 is not required
- No prior experience required
Skills & Knowledge
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of health and safety — essential in an aviation environment
- Knowledge of basic maintenance of machinery with low level of complexity

Frequently Asked Questions – Road Workers Aid Aviation Jobs
What are aviation quality standards for runway maintenance? Runway and airfield maintenance at a military air force base must meet standards aligned with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 14 — Aerodromes — which specifies requirements for airfield surface condition, marking, lighting, and foreign object debris (FOD) management. In the SANDF context, these standards are applied through DOD and SAAF engineering and infrastructure policy. The Road Workers Aid works within this framework — ensuring that runways and taxiways meet the surface condition and cleanliness standards required for safe aircraft operations.
What is Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and why is runway sweeping critical? Foreign Object Debris (FOD) refers to any object — stone, bolt, piece of metal, loose aggregate, vegetation, or other material — that is present on an airfield surface and could be ingested by an aircraft engine, strike an aircraft’s undercarriage or fuselage, or cause a tyre burst. FOD ingestion is one of the leading causes of serious aircraft damage and engine failure in aviation globally. Regular, thorough runway sweeping to remove all FOD is therefore a direct flight safety function — making the Road Workers Aid’s daily sweeping duties operationally critical.
What is a compass swing bay? A compass swing bay is a specially designated, magnetically neutral area on or near an airfield — used to calibrate an aircraft’s magnetic compass by rotating the aircraft through 360 degrees and recording compass deviation at each heading. The area must be free from ferrous metal and other magnetic interference. Maintaining the compass swing bay infrastructure — keeping the surface serviceable and the surrounding environment clear of magnetic materials — is a technical airfield maintenance responsibility unique to air force and airport facilities.
What is an engine running bay? An engine running bay (also called an engine ground run bay or hush house) is a specially constructed facility where aircraft engines are tested and run at power while the aircraft is stationary — for maintenance testing, post-repair checks, and performance verification. The infrastructure requires reinforced surfaces, blast deflectors, and drainage systems that must be maintained to enable safe engine testing without risk to personnel or adjacent aircraft. Maintaining these facilities is part of the Road Workers Aid’s operational scope.
How does this post differ from the Groundsman posts at AFB Makhado? Both are Level 02, ABET-qualified, no-experience permanent government posts at AFB Makhado. The Groundsman (x14) maintains gardens, lawns, and general terrain. The Road Workers Aid maintains aviation-critical infrastructure — runways, taxiways, hardstands, compass swing bays, and engine running bays — to aviation quality standards. The Road Workers Aid role carries greater technical specificity and operates within a safety-critical aviation environment, making it the most professionally distinctive Level 02 post in the current AFB Makhado batch.
