Position Overview
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is seeking a Post Basic Qualified Pharmacist Assistant for their Woodburn Square store in Pietermaritzburg. In this role, you will provide pharmaceutical care by taking responsibility for patients’ medicine-related needs and ensuring compliance with legal and professional standards. You will play a critical part in dispensing, stock management, and customer guidance to promote health and safety within the store.
Key Responsibilities

Assist with the sale and supply of Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines or scheduled substances

Assist in compounding, preparation, and manipulation of non-sterile medicines according to approved formulas and SOPs
-
Support manufacturing and re-packaging of medicines in accordance with pharmacist supervision
-
Control and distribute stock of Schedule 1–5 medicines, ensuring accurate inventory management
-
Assist with ordering of medicines and scheduled substances up to Schedule 6 under authorised instruction
-
Interpret and prepare prescriptions accurately, labelling medicines and advising patients on correct usage
-
Capture script details on the system and verify patient information

Provide professional guidance to patients at the dispensary, front-shop, and self-medication areas

Follow up on prescription tracking reports and patient appointments as requested by dispensary management

Ensure accurate processing of medical aid claims and correction of rejected scripts

Authorise chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medication under supervision
-
Maintain accurate customer profiles and merge local profiles with UCS when required

Monitor low-stock or out-of-stock items and report discrepancies to dispensary management

Facilitate bi-annual stock takes and maintain strict cash and asset control
Minimum Requirements
-
Grade 12 / Matric
-
Basic Pharmacist Assistance qualification
-
Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)

Computer literacy (MS Office)
-
English proficiency and at least one additional language
-
Strong attention to detail and numerical skills
-
Able to work under pressure and manage time effectively
Advantageous Skills:
-
Knowledge of Retail/FMCG operations
-
Experience with Unisolv, SAP, or E-Scripting
-
Oncology experience
-
Third additional language
-
Knowledge of drug, family planning, and complementary medicine
Special Conditions of Employment

Must be registered with the South African Pharmacy Council

Willing and able to work retail hours

Physically fit and able to stand for extended periods

South African citizen with a valid driver’s license
