HPCSA-registered and SANAS-accredited across all laboratories, PathCare operates to internationally benchmarked ISO 15189 quality standards — ensuring that every result delivered is accurate, reliable, and clinically defensible.
The Vaalpark branch in Vereeniging serves the broader Vaal Triangle community — one of Gauteng’s most significant industrial and residential regions — and the Phlebotomy Technician / Staff Nurse is the essential clinical professional at the heart of every patient’s diagnostic journey at this branch.
PathCare is committed to Employment Equity and diversity. All qualified candidates — including people with disabilities — are encouraged to apply.
Purpose of the Role
The Phlebotomy Technician / Staff Nurse is responsible for collecting blood and non-blood specimens with clinical precision and compassionate patient care, operating Point of Care instruments, and delivering frontline patient service — consistently upholding PathCare’s values of excellence, ethics, and integrity in a shift-based branch environment that serves the Vaalpark and Vereeniging community.

Frequently Asked Questions – Phlebotomy Technician Jobs South Africa
What is the order of draw and why does it matter? The order of draw is the standardised sequence in which blood collection tubes must be filled during a multi-tube venepuncture — designed to prevent cross-contamination between the different chemical additives in each tube type. For example, citrate tubes (blue top) must be drawn before EDTA tubes (purple top) to prevent EDTA contamination affecting coagulation results. Incorrect order of draw is one of the most common pre-analytical errors in pathology — making sound order of draw knowledge a critical clinical competency for any experienced phlebotomist.
What is a Point of Care instrument? Point of Care (POC) instruments are compact, near-patient testing devices that produce rapid diagnostic results at or near the patient — without sending specimens to the main laboratory. Common POC tests in a pathology branch setting include blood glucose, haemoglobin, INR/coagulation, urine analysis, and rapid antigen testing. The Phlebotomy Technician at Vaalpark operates and maintains these instruments as part of the branch’s diagnostic service offering.
What is Meditech? Meditech is a widely used healthcare information system — used by many South African pathology providers including PathCare — for patient registration, test ordering, specimen tracking, result reporting, and billing. Prior Meditech experience is listed as advantageous and will be a differentiator in shortlisting, though system training will be provided to the successful candidate.
Why is a manual transmission Code B licence specifically required? A manual transmission driver’s licence requirement reflects PathCare’s operational vehicle fleet at this branch — where manual vehicles are used for specimen transport or mobile phlebotomy duties. Candidates with automatic-only licence endorsements do not meet this specific requirement.
Must I work weekends? Yes — shift work including weekend shifts is an explicitly stated, non-negotiable operational requirement for this role. Pathology branches serve patients 7 days a week, and the Phlebotomy Technician must be available across the full shift schedule.
