Role Purpose

The Pharmacist at Dis-Chem Montana is responsible for the comprehensive provision of pharmaceutical care. You will take full accountability for patients’ medicine-related needs, ensuring safe, effective, and ethical therapy. This role involves the accurate interpretation of scripts, clinical checking of prepared medication, and acting as a primary healthcare advisor to the Pretoria community. You will operate within the legal frameworks set by the Pharmacy Act and Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP).

Key Performance Areas & Responsibilities

1. Pharmaceutical Care & Dispensing

  • Script Interpretation: Accurately interpret prescriptions and act in a professional manner within the legal requirements of the SAPC.

  • Clinical Evaluation: Evaluate patient needs by determining the indication, safety, and effectiveness of prescribed therapy.

  • Supervision & Accountability: Sign off and check all prescriptions prepared by assistants or interns, accepting full accountability for correctness as per GPP 2.7.1.2.1.f.

  • Compounding: Oversee or perform the compounding, manipulation, and packaging of scheduled substances.

2. Patient Consultation & Advice

  • Pharmacist-Initiated Therapy (PIT): Provide expert advice and initiate therapy where appropriate for minor ailments.

  • Instruction & Compliance: Furnish clear instructions to patients regarding dosages, potential drug interactions, and correct medicine usage to ensure compliance.

  • Referrals: Evaluate disease conditions and refer patients to in-store health facilities or medical practitioners when necessary.

3. Financial & Medical Aid Administration

  • Claims Processing: Accurately capture script details and process paperwork for medical aid submissions, resolving any rejected claims or errors.

  • Authorizations: Facilitate the authorization of chronic, oncology, and HIV/AIDS medication.

  • Cost Communication: Transparently explain all medical aid costs, co-payments, and generic alternatives to patients.

4. Stock & Operational Management

  • Inventory Control: Report low or out-of-stock levels to the Dispensary Manager and facilitate bi-annual stock takes.

  • Legislative Compliance: Ensure all registers (Schedule 6, etc.) are kept up to date in accordance with South African legislation.

  • Housekeeping: Maintain the dispensary according to Dis-Chem’s high standards of cleanliness and professional appearance.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

To be considered for this professional role in Montana, candidates must meet the following:

  • Education: Grade 12 / Matric and a BPharm Degree (or equivalent).

  • Registration: Current valid registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).

  • Experience: 2–3 years of experience in Pharmaceuticals (including Student/Internship years in a retail pharmacy).

  • Skills: Proficiency in MS Office; knowledge of Unisolv, SAP, or Vexall is highly advantageous.

  • Language: Strong command of English; a third additional language is an advantage.

  • Citizenship: South African citizenship with clear credit and criminal records.
