Dis-Chem Pharmacies is offering an opportunity for a qualified Pharmacist Assistant (Post-Basic) to join its dispensary team on a permanent basis. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, patient-focused healthcare professional who is passionate about medication management, compliance, and delivering high standards of pharmaceutical care under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.

About the Role

The Pharmacist Assistant (Post-Basic) plays a vital role in supporting the pharmacist in the safe, accurate, and compliant dispensing of medication. The role includes stock control, patient follow-ups, scheme authorisations, and providing health-related information to patients, while ensuring strict adherence to pharmacy legislation and company SOPs.

All dispensing-related activities are performed under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist and must be signed off accordingly.


Key Responsibilities

Dispensing and Medication Support

The successful candidate will assist in the dispensing of Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines and scheduled substances, ensuring all activities are carried out in compliance with legal requirements and company procedures, and are signed off by a pharmacist.


Stock Control and Dispensary Organisation

Responsibilities include assisting with the control of dispensary stock, ensuring cleanliness and correct packing of shelves, monitoring medicine expiry dates, and reporting low, out-of-stock items, and stock discrepancies to the Dispensary Manager.


Patient Follow-Ups and Call Centre Support

The role involves following up with patients regarding script tracking reports as requested by the Dispensary Manager, assisting with follow-up appointments, and supporting call centre scripts and patient service telephone calls.


Patient Education and Health Promotion

The Pharmacist Assistant will provide relevant health information to patients to promote wellness, adherence, and informed healthcare decisions.


Medical Scheme Authorisations

The position includes assisting with medical scheme authorisations for chronic medication, HIV and AIDS treatment, and oncology medicines.


Receiving and Managing Dispensary Stock

The role requires receiving dispensary stock in accordance with company SOPs and ensuring accurate handling, storage, and documentation.


Minimum Requirements

Candidates applying for this position must meet the following essential requirements:

  • Proficiency in English and at least one additional language (read, write, and speak)

  • Strong computer and numerical skills

  • Excellent time management and ability to work under pressure

  • High attention to detail and accuracy

  • Strong communication, listening, and customer service skills

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team

  • Professional conduct with high levels of honesty, integrity, and accountability


Advantageous Experience and Skills

The following will be considered advantageous:

  • Retail FMCG or Dis-Chem front shop experience with a strong performance record

  • Knowledge of drug and family planning and complementary medicine

  • Experience with Unisolv, SAP, and E-Scripting systems


Special Conditions of Employment

  • Successful completion of a proficiency test assessing eligibility to register with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)

  • South African citizenship

  • Clear criminal and credit record (MIE checks applicable)
