Job Description

The Night Duty Phlebotomy Technician role at PathCare is essential to maintaining the integrity of our diagnostic services. You will be responsible for performing phlebotomy procedures, handling specimens, and assisting with Point of Care testing. Your work ensures that doctors, healthcare professionals, and patients receive accurate results in a timely manner, even outside standard working hours.

You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections with precision, adhering to PathCare protocols and safety standards. Your role will also include running Point of Care instruments such as Hemocue, Stratus, and arterial blood gas analysers, as well as managing specimen order and handling in line with best practice. Your attention to detail and technical skill will support clinical accuracy and uphold PathCare’s reputation for excellence.

As a night shift technician, you will often work independently, making decisions that ensure smooth workflow and patient safety. You will interact with internal and external clients, provide guidance to junior staff, and assist with maintaining accurate records and laboratory documentation. Your work will also involve supporting stock management and ensuring that all equipment and instruments are operating correctly.

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Phlebotomy Technician qualification

  • Current registration with the HPCSA

  • Valid South African Code B driver’s licence (manual transmission)

  • Minimum of 1 year post-registration phlebotomy experience

  • Experience with Point of Care instruments (Hemocue, Stratus, arterial blood gas) is highly advantageous

  • Pathology experience and knowledge of specimen handling, including order of draw

  • Computer literate; familiarity with Meditech is advantageous

  • Experience working night shifts and independently
