Purpose of the Role

The primary goal of the Millwright Artisan is to ensure that all manufacturing equipment is serviced, optimized, and maintained according to strict technical specifications. You will be responsible for minimizing downtime through proactive preventative maintenance and rapid response to mechanical or electrical failures. Your expertise will ensure our production lines remain in optimal condition, adhering to the highest standards of engineering practice and food safety.

Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Maintenance & Repairs

  • Breakdown Resolution: Inspect, test, and diagnose machine malfunctions to restore equipment functionality quickly.

  • Preventative Maintenance: Carry out daily inspections and pre-planned maintenance tasks to keep the facility in peak condition.

  • Root Cause Analysis: Perform detailed root cause investigations to prevent the re-occurrence of technical failures.

  • Specialized Repairs: Handle gearbox failures, motor replacements, shaft polishing, and the tightening of v-belts and chains.

2. Electrical & Automation Systems

  • Fault-Finding: Diagnose and repair electrical systems and apparatus, including basic PLC and VSD fault-finding.

  • Machine Expertise: Maintain AC and DC machines, boilers, air compressors, and specialized equipment such as DEJONG and Handtmann machines.

  • Standards: Define and follow Standard Maintenance Procedures (SOPs) for all electrical repairs.

3. Mechanical Fabrication & Fitting

  • Welding: Perform TIG and Arc welding, primarily working with stainless steel.

  • Machining: Operate lathes, hydraulic presses, drill presses, and plate benders to fabricate or repair pins, rollers, and bushes.

  • Pneumatics & Hydraulics: Attend to fault-finding on hydraulic power packs and repair water and pneumatic pipelines.

4. Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Food Safety: Adhere strictly to Food Safety and Hygiene requirements (HACCP) defined in the Quality and Food Safety system.

  • OHS Compliance: Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and RCL Foods’ internal safety policies at all times.

  • Documentation: Ensure all job cards are completed accurately and timeously with relevant technical information.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications & Education

  • Technical Qualification: N3 – N6 or NCV Technical qualification.

  • Trade Test: Must possess a recognized Millwright Trade Test certificate.

Experience & Knowledge

  • FMCG Experience: 2 to 5 years of experience as a qualified Artisan in the FMCG industry (Food and Beverage experience preferred).

  • Equipment Knowledge: Familiarity with flow wrappers, cooking pots, cuber machines, X-rays, metal detectors, spiral freezers, and vacuum pumps.

  • System Knowledge: Understanding of ammonia and glycol plants, PLC’s, VSD’s, and industrial lubricants.

Core Competencies

  • Problem Solving: Strong analytical skills for complex mechanical and electrical troubleshooting.

  • Leadership: Ability to direct and train assistants in installation and maintenance tasks.

  • Adaptability: Willingness to assist production teams with machine start-ups and set-ups.
