Position Overview
The Department of Small Business Development is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Legal Administration Officer to provide expert legal advice, ensure legislative compliance, and protect the department’s interests through sound legal practices. The ideal candidate will possess deep knowledge of civil and criminal procedures, contract drafting, litigation, and policy formulation. This role requires precision, analytical ability, and professional judgment in managing the department’s legal obligations and engagements.
Key Responsibilities

Conduct legal research and prepare comprehensive legal opinions based on relevant laws, policies, and precedents.

Review and draft a variety of legal documents, contracts, and agreements to ensure compliance with legal and departmental requirements.

Provide legal advice on the Department’s operations, initiatives, and contractual relationships.

Verify and certify the legality, accuracy, and intent of departmental contracts before execution.

Represent or advise the Department in legal proceedings, disputes, and negotiations when required.

Provide mentorship and guidance to junior legal staff on drafting, litigation, and procedural matters.

Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure legal alignment and adherence to the legislative framework.

Support the development of internal policies and governance documents in accordance with legal standards.
Minimum Requirements
-
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or a four-year legal qualification recognized by SAQA.

Admission as an Attorney or Advocate of the Bar Council.

Minimum of eight (8) years of appropriate post-qualification legal experience.

Postgraduate qualification in Law will be an added advantage.

In-depth understanding of:

Civil and criminal litigation procedures.

Drafting of contracts and legislative documents.

Public sector legislative frameworks and court rules.

Computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office.
