About Fidelity Services Group
Fidelity Services Group is South Africa’s largest integrated security solutions provider — delivering armed response, access control, guarding, fleet management, electronic security, and investigations services across South Africa and the broader African continent. Operating at scale across multiple divisions and provinces, Fidelity’s Group Legal function is a commercially critical department — managing the full spectrum of commercial contracting, regulatory compliance, tender review, legislative monitoring, and group governance matters that arise across this complex, multi-divisional organisation.
The Junior Legal Assistant joins the Head of Group Legal Counsel’s team at the Helderkruin corporate office — contributing substantive legal expertise to a group legal function operating at the highest levels of South African corporate and regulatory complexity.
Fidelity Services Group supports transformation. Black Female Candidates are given priority per FSG’s transformation policy. Historically Disadvantaged Candidates are encouraged and supported.
Purpose of the Role
The Junior Legal Assistant is responsible for drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and finalising commercial agreements across all Fidelity Group divisions — managing contractual changes, reviewing tenders for legal and operational risk, ensuring group policy compliance, advising on legislative developments, and providing legal and administrative support to the Head of Group Legal Counsel and key internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities – Junior Legal Assistant
Commercial Contract Drafting, Review & Negotiation
- Draft, review, negotiate, and finalise various commercial agreements across all divisions within the Fidelity Group — including service agreements, supplier contracts, SLAs, NDAs, and other commercial instruments as required.
- Prepare and negotiate contracts — managing contractual changes, amendments, and renewals in accordance with the Group’s commercial and legal requirements.
- Review and keep updated the Group’s standard contractual templates — ensuring all templates remain legally current, commercially appropriate, and aligned with evolving legislation and Group policy.
Tender Review & Risk Assessment
- Review tenders in conjunction with the Tender Department — identifying and flagging legal and operational risks before submission or acceptance.
- Provide legal input that protects the Group’s interests in all tender processes — ensuring that contractual commitments arising from tender awards are understood and managed from the outset.
Compliance & Legislative Monitoring
- Ensure compliance with the Group’s policies, procedures, and standards across all legal matters — acting as a compliance reference point for business units seeking legal guidance.
- Keep abreast of legislative changes affecting the Fidelity Group’s business — proactively advising the business on new or amended legislation, regulations, and compliance requirements as they arise.
- Provide compliance and general legal support to the business as and when required.
Legal Support to Head of Group Legal Counsel
- Provide comprehensive legal and administrative support to the Head of Group Legal Counsel — executing instructions accurately, supporting legal research and documentation, and managing legal matters pertaining to the organisation.
- Liaise with external legal service providers and other key stakeholders on legal and related matters — acting as a professional and knowledgeable point of contact on behalf of the Group Legal function.
Stakeholder Liaison & Legal Advice

Skills & Competencies Required
⚖️ Commercial Contract Law & Drafting
The ability to draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements independently — across a diverse range of contract types and divisional commercial contexts — is the primary substantive legal competency this role demands. Post-article experience at a law firm or public entity legal department is the proven training ground for this skill.
📋 Tender Law & Risk Assessment
Understanding the legal and operational risks embedded in tender documents — and the ability to identify and articulate those risks clearly for the Tender Department and Group Legal Counsel — requires both legal drafting experience and sound knowledge of public procurement legislation and practice.
🏛️ Government Legislation & Regulatory Compliance
Sound, current knowledge of South African government legislation — including the Companies Act, POPIA, LRA, BCEA, the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act, and relevant sector-specific regulation — is essential for advising the business and ensuring group-wide compliance.
🔒 Confidentiality & Professional Integrity
Operating within the Group Legal Counsel’s office — with access to commercially sensitive contracts, litigation strategy, regulatory submissions, and executive correspondence — requires absolute professional discretion and unwavering ethical integrity.
💻 Advanced MS Office & Legal Technology
Proficiency in Word (for contract and legal document drafting), Excel (for legal matter tracking and reporting), and Outlook (for stakeholder correspondence management) — combined with an ability to work with legal databases and tracking systems — is a daily operational requirement.
🤝 Internal & External Stakeholder Management
Engaging professionally and knowledgeably with internal divisional leadership, external attorneys, regulatory bodies, and commercial counterparts — on behalf of the Head of Group Legal Counsel — requires strong written and verbal communication skills and confident legal knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions – Junior Legal Assistant Jobs South Africa
Is this role suitable for a newly admitted attorney? No — the role requires a minimum of 5 years of post-article experience at a law firm or public entity legal department. This is not an entry-level legal position; it requires a practitioner with demonstrable commercial contracting, compliance, and stakeholder management experience accumulated over at least five years of post-admission practice.
Why is a BCom degree specified rather than an LLB? The BCom requirement reflects the commercial orientation of this role — which sits at the intersection of legal expertise and business understanding. Candidates with a BCom Law, BCom LLB, or equivalent combination of commercial and legal qualifications are likely best positioned. However, candidates with an LLB and strong commercial practice experience should not be deterred — the BCom is the stated minimum, and equivalent commercially-oriented legal qualifications will be considered in context.
What types of commercial agreements will I draft and review? The role covers the full range of commercial instruments across Fidelity’s divisions — including security services agreements, guarding and armed response contracts, technology and fleet management agreements, supplier and vendor contracts, NDAs, SLAs, lease agreements, and employment-adjacent commercial instruments. The breadth and volume of contracting activity in a group of Fidelity’s scale provides exceptional commercial drafting experience.
What is the Tender Department and how does the Junior Legal Assistant support it? Fidelity regularly submits tenders to government departments, municipalities, state-owned enterprises, and large corporates for security services contracts. The Tender Department manages the commercial and operational tender process. The Junior Legal Assistant reviews tender documents alongside the Tender Department — identifying legal risk, advising on contractual commitments, and ensuring that the Group’s legal exposure is understood and managed before any tender submission or award acceptance.
Is post-article experience at a private law firm equivalent to public entity experience? Yes — the requirement specifically accepts either a law firm or a public entity Legal Department as qualifying experience environments. Both provide the post-article commercial and legal practice foundation the role requires. Candidates from private practice with commercial litigation, corporate law, or commercial contracts backgrounds are equally eligible alongside those with in-house public sector legal experience.
⚠️ Application Closing Date
Applications close 20 March 2026. If not contacted within 10 working days of the closing date, please consider your application unsuccessful.
