Permanent Government Groundsman Positions – Free State

The Department of Public Works invites applications from suitably qualified and hardworking individuals for five (5) Groundsman positions based within the Bloemfontein Regional Office and surrounding magistrate offices. Job Overview

The Groundsman role focuses on the upkeep and maintenance of gardens, lawns, and outdoor areas within government facilities. Successful candidates will be responsible for routine gardening duties, lawn care, plant maintenance, and ensuring that outdoor spaces remain clean, safe, and visually appealing.

This position requires physical fitness, attention to detail, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Candidates must be dependable, disciplined, and able to carry out tasks independently while following instructions and schedules.


Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Grade 10 qualification or NCV Level 2

  • Nursery or gardening experience will be an added advantage

  • Basic communication and literacy skills

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Ability to perform routine physical tasks

  • Willingness to work outdoors

  • Knowledge of correct usage of garden materials and equipment will be an added advantage

No formal experience is required, making this an accessible opportunity for entry-level candidates with an interest in grounds maintenance.


Key Responsibilities

Garden and Lawn Maintenance

  • Mowing lawn areas, including developed lawns and veld grass areas

  • Watering plants correctly to prevent plant damage or loss

  • Fertilising lawns and flower beds as required

  • Pruning dead flower heads and maintaining healthy plant growth


Plant and Nursery Support

  • Keeping flower beds and shrub areas weed-free

  • Cultivating and maintaining flower and shrub beds

  • Assisting in plant propagation areas where required

  • Supporting nursery operations at designated sites


General Groundskeeping Duties

  • Sweeping and raking hard surfaces within the area of responsibility

  • Ensuring outdoor walkways and common areas are clean and safe

  • Upholding good conduct and professional behaviour at all times


Additional Duties

  • Cleaning restrooms allocated to the Department of Public Works according to the set cleaning schedule

  • Reporting any maintenance issues or safety hazards observed during daily duties
