What Does a Government Groundsman Do?
A Groundsman at the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure is responsible for the maintenance, care, and presentation of government building premises, outdoor areas, gardens, lawns, and surrounding grounds. Key Duties & Responsibilities
🏛️ Premises & Surroundings Maintenance
- Clean building premises and all surrounding outdoor areas to the required standard
- Empty and dispose of outdoor dirt bins and waste receptacles regularly
- Ensure all outdoor areas, pathways, entrances, and surroundings are neat, clean, and hazard-free
- Maintain the overall appearance and presentation of all assigned government building exteriors
🌱 Garden Maintenance & Horticultural Care
- Water all garden areas, flowerbeds, trees, and planted areas regularly and as required
- Prune and trim flowers, shrubs, hedges, and trees to maintain a neat and professional appearance
- Mow grass lawns and green areas using appropriate lawn care equipment
- Remove weeds from gardens, flowerbeds, pathways, and surrounding areas
- Collect and remove garden refuse, cuttings, and organic waste from all outdoor areas
- Apply insecticides and pest control treatments to garden areas in a safe and controlled manner
- Remove dead flowers, plants, and vegetation from all garden and landscaped areas
- Cultivate and prepare soil for the planting and growth of new trees, flowers, and plants
- Support seasonal planting, transplanting, and garden improvement projects as directed

- Detect and report malfunctioning, damaged, or faulty gardening equipment and tools to the supervisor immediately
- Carry out minor repairs on defective gardening tools and equipment to maintain operational readiness
- Clean all gardening tools and equipment after use and store correctly in designated areas
- Clean and maintain all personal protective equipment (PPE) used during gardening and grounds maintenance activities
