Central Johannesburg TVET College is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for GROUNDSMAN: REF NO: CJC/GA/023/2026 (6 POSTS) at the Central Office. These positions are responsible for maintaining the college grounds, gardens, and infrastructure to ensure a clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environment for staff, students, and visitors.

Successful candidates will perform gardening, groundskeeping, and basic maintenance tasks while adhering to health and safety standards and operational procedures.

Minimum Requirements

Educational Qualification:

  • ABET / Standard 8 / Grade 10
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills

Experience:

  • Experience in gardening and cleaning environments will be advantageous

Inherent Job Requirements:

  • Must be physically fit to lift heavy objects
  • Willingness to rotate between departments and operational sites

Knowledge and Competencies:

  • Occupational Health and Safety Act knowledge
  • Knowledge of cleaning equipment, machinery, and materials
  • Knowledge of hygiene, storage requirements, and repetitive maintenance tasks
  • Understanding of relevant facilities policies, legislation, prescripts, and procedures
  • Good communication skills (reading, writing, and speaking)
  • Ability to operate machinery and relevant equipment safely

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Gardening and Grounds Maintenance

  • Watering, pruning, trimming, and weeding of plants
  • Cutting, seeding, transplanting, and mowing lawns
  • Spraying and disposal of organic waste
  • Digging and mixing compost

Infrastructure and Building Support

  • Maintain road markings, painted surfaces, and canals
  • Clean signs, light fittings, offices, classrooms, workshops, roads, pavements, and greenhouses
  • Mix and lay cement for walkways and driveways
  • Unblock drains and empty/clean waste bins

Equipment and Asset Care

  • Clean, oil, and sharpen gardening tools and equipment
  • Detect and report faulty equipment or malfunctioning tools
  • Repair minor defects in furniture, equipment, and gardening tools
  • Assist with loading and offloading furniture as required

Operational Support

  • Perform general housekeeping duties on college grounds
  • Support supervisors in ensuring safe and functional campus infrastructure
