About Air Force Base Durban
Air Force Base Durban — located at Prospecton Road, Isipingo, on Durban’s South Coast — is the South African Air Force’s primary KwaZulu-Natal installation. Situated between the Durban CBD and the South Coast communities of Amanzimtoti, Isipingo, and Prospecton, AFB Durban serves a strategically important coastal and port city — maintaining operational, administrative, and support functions for the SAAF’s KwaZulu-Natal presence. The Groundsman team maintains the base’s grounds, gardens, and terrain to the standard expected of a professional, active military installation in South Africa’s second-largest city.
This is the first KwaZulu-Natal post in the current DOD batch — extending the cluster’s geographic coverage to a sixth province.
Purpose of the Role
The Groundsman is responsible for the cultivation, maintenance, and presentation of all garden areas, lawns, flower beds, and terrain at AFB Durban — including soil preparation, planting, fertilising, irrigating, weeding, pruning, mowing, edge-cutting, refuse removal, and maintaining the neatness of all unit areas to base standard.
Key Responsibilities – Groundsman
Garden Cultivation & Planting
- Cultivate garden areas — maintaining all designated garden spaces to a high standard of presentation.
- Prepare soil for the planting of plants — conditioning soil to create productive planting beds across the base.
- Maintain flower beds and other garden beds by fertilising, irrigating, weeding, and pruning — applying regular, systematic care to all planted areas.
Lawn Maintenance
- Mow lawns using appropriate machinery — maintaining all grass areas at the correct height and in a neat, even condition.
- Cut edges along all lawn borders, paths, and paved areas — ensuring clean, professionally finished lawn edges throughout.
- Irrigate lawns — applying water at correct times and quantities for healthy growth year-round in the KwaZulu-Natal coastal climate.
Refuse Removal & Terrain Maintenance
- Remove refuse from the terrain — collecting and clearing all waste material from grounds areas across the base.
- Load refuse onto the truck for transportation to refuse dumps, or burn refuse as directed — ensuring correct disposal in accordance with base environmental procedures.
- Maintain the neatness of all unit areas — keeping every section of the base grounds clean, tidy, and presentable at all times.
Equipment Operation & Loading
- Load and unload various articles and equipment needed on the grounds — supporting the logistical movement of horticultural and grounds maintenance equipment.
- Operate cleaning machines and basic grounds maintenance machinery — applying knowledge of basic hand tools and equipment safely and effectively.
- Apply health and safety knowledge in all grounds and machinery activities — preventing accidents, equipment damage, and environmental harm.
Minimum Requirements – Groundsman
- ABET qualification (minimum) — essential; Grade 12 not required
- No prior experience required
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of health and safety
- Knowledge of basic machinery maintenance (low complexity) and hand tools
- Ability to operate cleaning machines
- Ability to perform routine tasks in a team and individually

Frequently Asked Questions – Groundsman Government Jobs Durban
Where exactly is AFB Durban located and how do I get there? AFB Durban is located on Prospecton Road, Isipingo, 4133 — on Durban’s South Coast, approximately 20km south of the Durban CBD. The base is accessible by road from the N2 South Coast Highway via the Isipingo/Prospecton interchange, and is served by South Coast Metrorail commuter trains (Isipingo station) and minibus taxi routes from Amanzimtoti, Umbogintwin, and the greater Durban South area. The postal address for applications is P.O. Box 1120, Amanzimtoti, 4125.
How does this AFB Durban Groundsman post compare to the AFB Makhado Groundsman posts? Both are Level 02, ABET-qualified, no-experience permanent government Groundsman posts with identical core responsibilities. The AFB Makhado posts (x14) are in Limpopo’s Soutpansberg region — a dry, inland climate with hot summers. The AFB Durban posts (x3) are on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast — a warm, humid subtropical coastal environment where year-round growing conditions require different irrigation, pruning, and plant care approaches. Durban-based candidates should apply for the AFB Durban posts; Limpopo-based candidates for AFB Makhado. Candidates willing to relocate may apply for both.
Is the KwaZulu-Natal climate a consideration for outdoor grounds maintenance work? Yes — AFB Durban’s Isipingo location experiences Durban’s characteristic subtropical climate: hot, humid summers (October–March) with significant rainfall, and mild, dry winters. Outdoor grounds maintenance in this environment means working through summer heat and humidity. The DOD provides appropriate PPE and work clothing. Candidates should be physically fit, comfortable working outdoors in KwaZulu-Natal conditions, and able to perform routine physical tasks year-round.
What languages are useful for working at AFB Durban? English is the DOD’s official working language and the stated communication requirement. In the broader Isipingo and South Coast community, isiZulu is the most widely spoken home language. While isiZulu proficiency is not a stated requirement, practical isiZulu communication ability is a natural advantage for day-to-day interactions with colleagues and community contacts in the KwaZulu-Natal environment.
Are there other DOD posts currently available at AFB Durban? The current DOD recruitment batch lists only the Groundsman (x3) posts for AFB Durban — making this the base’s sole current employment opportunity in this cycle. Candidates in the Durban South Coast area are encouraged to apply promptly, as this is the only entry-level permanent government post available at AFB Durban in the current batch.
