The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is responsible for managing South Africa’s water resources, ensuring sustainable water provision, and maintaining water infrastructure. Position Overview
The Department is seeking a Groundsman to maintain and care for grounds and infrastructure at the Voelvlei Scheme. The role involves hands-on maintenance, gardening, minor repairs, and assisting with operational tasks to ensure a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment.
Minimum Requirements

Educational Qualification: ABET Certificate or relevant qualification.

Experience: Zero to one (1) year of relevant working experience; additional experience in manual work is advantageous.

Knowledge and Skills:
-
Handling general work equipment and appliances.
-
Gardening and grounds maintenance, including lawn care, pruning, and trimming.
-
Use of chemicals (fertilisers, herbicides, insecticides) safely and efficiently.
-
Daily maintenance procedures for equipment and machinery.
-
Support for water utilisation and water resource strategy.
-
Awareness of health and safety procedures and government legislation.
-
Ability to work in confined spaces, near rivers, dams, and canals.
-
Teamwork, punctuality, productivity, and reliability.

Key Responsibilities
-
Clean and maintain grounds, gardens, and surrounding infrastructure.
-
Repair tools and structures such as buildings, fences, and benches using hand and power tools.
-
Mix, spray, or spread fertilisers, herbicides, and insecticides on grass, shrubs, and trees using manual or automated sprayers.

Maintain sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, and other ground features.

Care for sod, plants, and trees; rake and mulch leaves; irrigate lawns and plants.

Sweep and clean parking lots, walkways, grounds, and buildings, including washing floors and windows.

Perform routine maintenance on equipment and log repairs; refer major repairs to service providers.

Conduct inspections and report defects such as structural cracks, embankment holes, or stagnant water.

Maintain accurate records, including job cards and equipment repair logs.

Assist other schemes and maintenance teams as required.
