Purpose of the Role

The Grain Grader is responsible for the correct sampling, grading, and capturing of all transactions during silo operational activities. The role also assists the Silo Manager in the profitable management of the silo, ensuring full compliance with relevant legislation, grading regulations, and operational procedures at all times.

This is a technically skilled, compliance-driven role that demands accuracy, integrity, strong agricultural knowledge, and the ability to manage grain intake, storage, fumigation, and quality processes in a busy silo environment.


Key Responsibilities – AFGRI Grain Grader

Grain Intake, Sampling & Grading

  • Receive incoming grain at the silo and ensure accurate, compliant grading and weighing of all grain receipts in line with regulatory and AFGRI standards.
  • Perform correct sampling procedures for all incoming grain deliveries, ensuring representative samples are taken and analysed accurately.
  • Resolve grading disputes professionally and efficiently during intake, applying knowledge of grading legislation and standards to reach fair, evidence-based outcomes.
  • Ensure all grading transactions are captured accurately and completely in the relevant systems.

Grain Handling, Storage & Quality Control

  • Ensure the proper handling and storing of all grain received at the facility, including fumigation, blending, and drying processes in line with operational procedures.
  • Conduct weekly sifting and condensation checks across all storage structures to identify and address any quality risks or pest activity.
  • Conduct bi-weekly mechanical and electrical inspections of grain grading equipment, including calibration checks to ensure measurement accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct weekly inspections of all silos and bins to assess structural condition, grain quality, temperature, and moisture levels.
  • Identify any grain quality concerns and escalate to the Silo Manager with recommendations for remedial action.

Daily Grain Balancing & Record Keeping

  • Conduct daily balancing of grain and oil seeds, ensuring that physical stock reconciles accurately with system records at all times.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and up-to-date records of all grain receipts, disposals, transfers, and stock adjustments.
  • Ensure all grading certificates, fumigation records, and compliance documentation are completed, filed, and retrievable as required.

Client Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong, professional relationships with both internal stakeholders and external clients — including farmers, transporters, and grain buyers.
  • Handle client queries and grading disputes with professionalism, accuracy, and a solution-oriented approach within prescribed turnaround times.
  • Represent AFGRI’s values of integrity, reliability, and agricultural expertise in every client interaction at the silo.

Health, Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with all health and safety rules, policies, and procedures applicable to the silo and grain handling environment.
  • Ensure all prescribed personal protective equipment (PPE) — including respiratory protection for fumigation activities — is used correctly and consistently.
  • Adhere to all legislative requirements governing grain grading, fumigation, and silo operations.
  • Report any safety hazards, compliance gaps, or equipment faults to the Silo Manager immediately upon discovery.

Coaching & Team Support

  • Provide on-the-job coaching and guidance to junior or trainee grain graders, building their technical knowledge and grading competence.
  • Contribute positively to the silo team’s overall operational performance and efficiency, sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues as required.

Educational Qualifications

  • Grade 12 (Matric) — required
  • Qualified Grader — must be in possession of all required grading and fumigation certificates — essential

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in grain storage and grain grading — essential
  • Experience must include time spent as a Trainee Grain Grader
  • Hands-on experience with fumigation, blending, drying, and silo inspection processes is required
