About the Department of Water and Sanitation

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is responsible for the management, development, and protection of South Africa’s water resources. The Department ensures sustainable water provision, maintenance of water infrastructure, and supports economic and social development. Position Overview

The Department is seeking forty-six (46) General Workers to support the Northern Operations Directorate across multiple sites. These roles involve assisting with maintenance, operational support, and general tasks to ensure the efficient and safe functioning of government water infrastructure.

Successful candidates will work closely with artisans and technical teams to maintain canals, pipelines, dams, servitudes, terrain, and other related infrastructure.

Minimum Requirements

  • Educational Qualification: ABET Certificate. Higher qualifications are advantageous.

  • Added Advantage: Relevant experience in a similar environment.

  • Knowledge and Skills:

    • Basic knowledge of gardening and grounds maintenance, including lawn care processes.

    • Understanding of maintenance practices for safe and efficient upkeep of government water infrastructure and associated facilities.

    • Physical fitness to perform manual labour in varied environments.

    • Awareness of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general maintenance tasks including weed control, gardening, painting, firebreak maintenance, and herbicide application.

  • Conduct routine inspections of departmental infrastructure.

  • Assist with maintenance of government water infrastructure including canals, pipelines, dams, servitudes, terrain, and buildings.

  • Load and off-load equipment, materials, and goods as required.

  • Identify and report faults, defects, and safety hazards to supervisors promptly.

  • Adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and all related safety regulations.

  • Assist with other general duties as requested to support departmental operations.
