Frequently Asked Questions – General Worker Silo Jobs South Africa
What is a grain silo and what happens there? A grain silo is a large storage facility where harvested grain — such as maize, wheat, sunflower, and sorghum — is received from farmers, weighed, tested for quality, dried, cleaned, stored, and later loaded out for processing or trading. The General Worker supports the smooth daily running of all these activities through cleaning, loading assistance, stock support, and housekeeping.
Is working at heights required in this role? Yes. Working at heights is a requirement of the silo environment. VKB Group provides full training for working at heights and in confined spaces — so no prior experience or certification is required at the point of application.
Is previous agricultural experience required? Previous experience in an industrial, agricultural, or construction environment is listed as an advantage but is not an essential requirement. The role is open to entry-level candidates with Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 who are physically fit, safety-conscious, and willing to learn.
Is this role seasonal or permanent? This is a permanent position — not a seasonal contract. While silo operations are particularly busy during the grain harvest season, the General Worker role is a year-round permanent function.
