Position Overview
The Department of Water and Sanitation is seeking a motivated and physically capable General Worker to join the Southern Operations Directorate in Breede/Gouritz (Western Cape – Worcester). The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of manual and maintenance-related tasks to support the department’s infrastructure, grounds, and facilities.
This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys working outdoors, contributing to public infrastructure maintenance, and ensuring that water systems and government facilities operate efficiently and safely.
Minimum Requirements

Educational Qualification: ABET Certificate (Grade 10 equivalent).

Experience: Prior experience in performing manual or general labour will be an added advantage.

Knowledge and Competencies:
-
Basic knowledge of general work practices and handling equipment or appliances.

Understanding of lawn care, pruning, trimming, and basic gardening techniques.
-
Familiarity with chemical use, dilution/mixing processes, and maintenance procedures for equipment.

Awareness of health and safety procedures and government legislation.
-
Ability to perform physical labour in or near rivers, dams, canals, and confined spaces.
-
Must be reliable, responsible, and willing to work as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities

Perform a wide range of general assistant duties, including loading and off-loading furniture, materials, and equipment.

Clean and maintain government vehicles, machinery, and tools to ensure optimal functioning.

Keep workstations and operational areas clean and well-organized.

Conduct lawn maintenance, pruning of trees, and general grounds upkeep.

Perform basic repairs to tools, fences, and small structures using hand and power tools.

Mix, spray, or spread fertilizers using manual or automated sprayers.

Maintain sidewalks, driveways, planters, and other garden areas.

Assist with cleaning, repairing, and maintaining public water infrastructure such as canals, drains, pipelines, and dams.

Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental standards during operations.
