About the General Worker Role
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is responsible for the effective management of South Africaβs water resources and infrastructure. The General Worker position is essential for maintaining water infrastructure facilities, ensuring safety, and supporting operational efficiency across dams, canals, pipelines, and related facilities.
This role is ideal for candidates who are physically active, detail-oriented, and interested in hands-on work in environmental and water infrastructure settings.
Position Overview
General Workers perform routine maintenance and operational support tasks at government water infrastructure sites. The role involves handling gardening equipment, performing inspections, and assisting with the upkeep and safety of dams, canals, and associated facilities. Candidates will contribute to both preventive maintenance and daily operational activities that ensure smooth water resource management.
Key Responsibilities

Perform general maintenance tasks, including weed control, gardening, painting, and maintaining fire breaks.

Apply herbicides safely as per regulations.

Conduct routine inspections of departmental infrastructure.

Maintain government water infrastructure including canals, pipelines, dams, servitudes, terrain, and buildings.

Report defects, faults, and safety hazards to supervisors promptly.

Load and off-load equipment as required.

Assist with other general duties as assigned by supervisors.

Comply with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and related safety regulations at all times.
Minimum Requirements

ABET Certificate or equivalent.

Higher qualifications will be an added advantage.

Preference for candidates with relevant work experience in similar environments.

Knowledge of handling gardening equipment and appliances.

Basic understanding of maintenance practices for government water infrastructure.
